Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

The hymnal is a confession of the congregation by which it is adopted, and should therefore be one in doctrine. Note c. If a congregation had a hymnal containing false doctrine and would not do away with it, the pastor could no longer serve there. How to act with wisdom in such a case, see Luth. 5, 167. An example of confessional faithfulness on this point. L. W. 17, 369-373. The hymnal song, or the evangelical-Lutheran hymn

2. The father of the hymn is Dr. M. Luther. Many hymns in our hymnal are by him. L. W. 500. How faith-strengthening their content is, how masterfully brief and concise their form! Luth. 64, 282-283. One of his first hymns: "Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g'mein." Schulb. 13, 118. Luther's musical ability. Schulb. 43, 119. Note a. The hymn proper arose with the Reformation. A gift of the Reformation. Only the Lutheran church developed the hymn. Luth. 5, 141. Loch. Almost all the hymns arose only after 1523. Note b. If Luther wished to make the congregation an active participant in the singing of the service, he first had to provide hymns. In doing so he made use of what could still be used from existing hymns, Luth. 17, 155, and purged out everything that recalled the veneration of saints and popish abominations. Schulb. 19, 116. Note c. Even his enemies sang Luther's hymns. Luth. Note d. "A preacher who cannot sing, I do not regard at all." Luther. L. W.

4. The blessing that flows from our hymnal songs. Our hymns have contributed much a. to the spread of the German language, b. to the spread of Lutheran doctrine. Our hymns contain doctrine. Consider, for example, the hymn "Es ist das Heil uns kommen her." Neb. 1903, 76. What Bible, catechism, and sermon bring in unbound speech, the Lutheran hymn brings in poetic form. Therefore it is a means of edification. Luth. 64, 234. 282. Our hymnal songs give God's Word its due force. Wis. Syn. 1905, part 2. Not the stirring of feeling, but above all the confirming of knowledge, is the main goal of the hymns, Wis. 97, 48, although they do not suppress feeling either. 45-46. — Thus the singing of these hymns is a means of preserving and spreading God's Word. Schulb. 11, 38-39. Note a. How much Luther's hymns contributed in various places to the introduction of the Reformation! The Jesuits say that the Lutheran hymns have killed more souls than Scripture and preaching. Luth. 43, 9. Schulb. 2, 326. Note b. The Pope sought to set up a dam against the influence of the Lutheran hymns, by having not only individual hymns but also hymnals published for the papal church. Note c. As often as false doctrine has arisen, Satan has also sought, through hymns, to spread that false doctrine. — Arius. Note d. Where God's Word dwelt abundantly in a land, there the hymn also flourished. Where God's Word was scarce, there the use of the hymn was also on the decline. Note e. These our hymns 1. have brought many souls to our church, and have helped keep many with the church, 2. have become, for many, an impulse to conversion (example, Luth. 47, 73), 3. have made heroes of women.

5. Our hymnal songs should now also be diligently sung. Note a. The Lutheran church has often been called the singing church. How many hymns were sung in the time of the Reformation! Schulb. 11, 231. Note b. The Christians in the first Christian congregations, too, often lifted their downcast spirits by singing sacred songs. Note d. A story: the healing power of a hymn. Luth. 16, 199. Note e. When one can no longer sing the hymns, one can still move them upon the lips and in the heart. Note f. The singing of these hymns is 1. a means of sanctification, 2. a means of upbringing. Parents should therefore sing all kinds of verses into the hearts of their children, which then remain for life. Note g. It is a mistake to let the hymn be crowded out at the confirmation service by a sacred folk song.

6. Also to be noted is the hymn a. in the time of Pietism. Whereas our earliest Lutheran hymns speak predominantly in the plural, e.g. "Gott der Vater wohn uns bei," the later ones speak more in the singular, e.g. "Ich singe dir mit Herz und Mund." The first period, 1517-1648, bears the stamp of objectivism. The second period, 1648-1756, bears the stamp of subjectivism (the personal relation to the doctrine of faith). Schulb. 43, 118. The hymns of the seventeenth century, from the time of the war, are calculated more for the family. Luth. 64, 318. 17, 146; b. in the time of Rationalism. Hymn verses from this period. Luth. 45, 21. 64, 363-364. The melodies of our hymnal songs. Luther also took care with the melody of the hymn. He and his co-workers a. created new melodies, b. took over old melodies, even when a text about Mary underlay them, and substituted a new text for them, c. used melodies drawn from both sacred and secular folk song. The most important melodies in use from 1517 to 1560. Schulb. 43, 239-243. On the authors of the melodies, Schulb. 43, 241-242. On composers since the time of Lucas Osiander, Schulb. 43, 274. 34, 131. All the original melodies of our hymnal, Luth. 6, 133. On the various keys: major and minor, Schulb. 44, 21-23. 50-53. Note b. The melodies 1. should be suited to the content. 2. are nowadays often altered and corrupted, 3. should be diligently practiced in school or in the singing lesson. Note c. In some congregations only a few melodies can be sung. This is to be regretted. Always singing the same melodies must in the end dull even the best churchgoer. Schulb. 36, 128. Note d. Pastor and teacher should come to an understanding as to which melodies, because of their difficulty, are not to be sung. The rhythmic singing of our hymnal songs. For chorale singing, the rhythmic manner is now the usual one, not the "choral" manner, in which every note was sung of equal duration. We have returned to the original manner. Schulb. 43, 117. 31. 360-363. Note a. The very content of many hymns, e.g. "Auf, auf, mein Herz, mit Freuden," etc., should urge us toward this. Note b. The school is the place to learn to sing well rhythmically.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
