grace-filled institution of our highly praised Savior. At 2 o'clock in the
afternoon there was worship again, and Pastor Dr. W. Sihler preached on
Acts 2:42. In the evening the brothers gathered at the residence of the
Pastor loci [pastor of the place], A. Selle, and made arrangements for the
opening of the first synodical session the following day.
I. Proceedings of Monday, April 26.
On Monday, April 26, the first session — like all that followed — was
opened with singing and prayer. Pastor A. Selle gave an address to the
assembled brothers, in which he set forth and impressed on their hearts
the important purpose of this gathering. There followed the preliminary
signing of the synodical constitution, first by those pastors and their
delegates who had taken part in drafting it at the last conference, so that
these might first constitute themselves as a synod and thereafter carry
out the admission of the rest. These first signers organized themselves as
a synodical body by electing officers pro tempore, namely: Pastor C. F.
W. Walther as Präses [president], Pastor F. W. Husmann as secretary,
and Dr. W. Sihler as treasurer. The admission and signing of the
remaining pastors then followed, and continued on the following days
with those arriving one after another. A necessary distinction was made,
however, under Chapter III, Section 3 of the constitution: only those
ministers authorized by their congregations, and thus joining together
with their congregations, and their delegates, were admitted as voting
members, while ministers entering merely in their own person, and thus
without their congregations, were admitted as advisory members of the
synod.
Note. Advisory members of this synod are therefore not, as in other
synods of this country, merely incidental and temporary, but real,
permanent members of it. The Secretary.
For easier reference we here bring together the names of all the pastors
and delegates, including those who joined only at later sessions.
