1. Austritt aus einer Gemeinde ſoll
a. nicht geſchehen:
1. wegen Zeremonien. Ausgenommen ſind Bekenntniszeremonien;
2. wegen nichtfundamentaler Lehrartikel;
3. wegen Mitteldingen. Um ſolcher Leute willen, die ſich aus Eigenſinn nicht in die von der Mehrheit gemachte gute Ordnung hineinſchicken wollen, würde man weder die Ordnung aufheben, noch ſolchen Leuten eine Entlaſſung gewähren;
4. wegen Gebrechen des Paſtors;
5. wegen Gebrechen der Gemeinde, ſonſt müßte man ſich von allen Gemeinden fern halten. Solche Gebrechen ſind z. B. zu laxe Kirchenzucht, Streitig· keit u. ſ. w.;
6. wegen Gaben des Paſtors. „Ich bin Apolliſch; ich bin Pauliſch.“ 1 Kor. 1, 12.
Anm. a. Sich aus ſündlichen Gründen von einer Ge⸗
meinde trennen, hieße Spaltung anrichten, 1 Kor. 1, 10,
dadurch man
1. ſich zugleich von Gott losreißt. Luk. 10, 16. Wer euch verachtet, der verachtet mich;
b. ſollgeſchehen
1. wegen falſcher Lehre;
2. wegen falſcher Praris;
3. woegen gottloſen Lebens des Paſtors.
Anm. a.
man dieſen Schritt tun muß.
Anm. b. Ehe man ſeinen Austritt erklärt, gehe man
den geordneten Weg und ſtrafe das Übel. Erſt wenn
alle Mittel erſchöpft ſind, trete man aus.
Anm. c. Eine gottgefällige Separation war .
1. der Austritt Luthers aus der Papſtkirche und
die Gründung der lutheriſchen Kirche;
b. die Separation in den Niederlanden:
3. die Separation der ſächſiſchen Freikirche.
Anm. d. Solcher Ausgetretenen ſollen wir uns an⸗
nehmen.
Anm. e. Etliche ſpezielle Fälle:
ſoll man austreten. Gründet er ſich auf andere
Dinge, ſo ſoll man, wenn irgend möglich, die Tren⸗
nung vermeiden.
2. Wenn der Paſtor jemandem aus unbilligen
Gründen das Abendmahl verweigert. — Auch hier
ſoll man, ehe man austritt, den geordneten Weg
gehen.

1. Withdrawal from a congregation should
a. not take place:
1. because of ceremonies. Confessional ceremonies are excepted;
2. because of non-fundamental articles of doctrine;
3. because of matters of indifference. For the sake of people who out of obstinacy will not fit into the good order established by the majority, one would neither abolish the order nor grant such people a release;
4. because of the pastor's shortcomings;
5. because of the congregation's shortcomings, for otherwise one would have to keep away from every congregation. Such shortcomings are, for example, too lax church discipline, strife, and so forth;
6. because of the pastor's gifts. "I am of Apollos; I am of Paul." 1 Cor. 1:12.
Note a. To separate from a congregation for sinful reasons would mean causing division, 1 Cor. 1:10, whereby one
1. tears oneself away from God at the same time. Luke 10:16: He that despiseth you despiseth me;
2. hinders the effectiveness of the preaching office and corrupts the temple of God. 1 Cor. 3:17.
Note b. With such people we can maintain no church fellowship; we may not receive them or send them preachers.
b. should take place
1. because of false doctrine;
2. because of false practice;
3. because of the ungodly life of the pastor.
Note a. The relationship between pastor and congregation member, which is established by God himself, should only be dissolved when weighty reasons compel it, and one is convinced in his conscience that he must take this step.
Note b. Before declaring one's withdrawal, one should follow the orderly process and rebuke the evil. Only when all means are exhausted should one withdraw.
Note c. A separation pleasing to God was
1. Luther's withdrawal from the papal church and the founding of the Lutheran church;
2. the separation in the Netherlands;
3. the separation of the Saxon Free Church.
Note d. We should receive such people who have withdrawn.
Note e. Some particular cases:
1. When members of a congregation submit a well-founded protest against the call of a pastor, which is not taken into consideration. — If the protest is based on false doctrine or an ungodly life, one should withdraw. If it is based on other matters, one should, if at all possible, avoid separation.
2. When the pastor refuses someone the Lord's Supper for unjust reasons. — Here too, before withdrawing, one should follow the orderly process.

2. Reasons for a release and withdrawal from one congregation to a neighboring sister congregation can be:
a. better and shorter roads;
b. a river, which is often an obstacle to coming to church;
c. the formation of a new congregation to which one is closer.
Note. In such a case it is left to the conscience of the individual whether he wishes to sever the bond between himself and his old congregation.
d. Language. One who understands English better may for that reason withdraw from the German congregation;
e. for someone hard of hearing, perhaps also the louder voice of a neighboring pastor;
f. insurmountable conscientious scruples against one's own pastor, where there is no grudge or ill will present — for example, if someone protested in vain at a call because he knows of the sins of that man's youth and feels he cannot summon proper trust in him.
Note a. In some cases the decision about this will present great difficulties.
Note b. Every parishioner should hold to his own pastor; every pastor should care for his own people and not reach into another's office; in a change of congregation everything should proceed honestly, in an orderly manner, and in keeping with love.
