on South America: —
Brazil.

In Brazil our Synod has been working twenty-eight years under
the most difficult circumstances, From the beginning there was much
material for missionary work. However, the work among the Spir-
itually neglected Germans, who were weak in spiritual understanding
and labored under great poverty, made but slow progress. Neverthe-
less we must thank God that our few laborers have shown great zeal
and energy and have gained one victory after the other. It ig true
that we have. no self-supporting congregations in Brazil at the
present time, but Mr. Horst could report that at the District synod
last year more than ten congregations, both their Pastors and dele-
gates, declared publicly that they would make every possible effort
to become self-sustaining in the next few years.

Good work is being done at our institution at Porto Alegre,
This year six graduates, who had also served one year ag vicars,

The work in Rio de Janeiro and neighboring citigs is to be
taken up in the near future. Pastor Hasse is at work now, ex-
Ploring the field, and the board asks Synod to make arrangements
to proceed with this work if the Opportunities are favorable.
