Ev. Luth. Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States. 1929, 68

Support of Indigent Students.

The report of the Board of Directors called attention to the fact
that upward of $75,000 is contributed annually for the support of
mdigent students. Consideration of the problems connected with the
upport of indigent students led to the suggestion that opportunities
might be found or created at the various institutions to have indigent
tudents do such work for the college in their spare time as will give
hem some income out of which to help defray their expenses. This
atter was referred to a committee, which brought in the following
‘ecommendations : —

As your Committee has found that the question whether our
‘students should be compelled to do some work in return for benefits
received involves the study of various problems in our educational in-
titutions and that it is impossible to study these problems in the
ourse of a few days, your Commitee suggests that Synod pass the
ollowing resolutions : —

Resolved, That the venerable President of Synod be asked to
\ppoint a committee of such men as are familiar with conditions at
our educational institutions and that this committee make a careful
study of the question whether the students at our various institutions
‘should be compelled to do some work in return for the benefits re-
“eeived from Synod or any of its Districts (tuition, lodging, board, ete.)
.and that such committee shall make its report and recommendation
o Synod at its next (35th) regular convention.

Before action was taken, the chairman of the committee stated
hat the committee to be appointed would report also to the admin-
strators of the Indigent Students’ Fund.
