Ev. Luth. Synodical Conference of North America, 1954 151

Piney Woods, Miss.

About 26 miles south of Jackson, Miss., the “Crossroads of the
South,” in Rankin County, among the piney woods and magnolia
trees, stands an institution of learning known as Piney Woods

J. H. Wedig was called to this task. For many years without inter-
ruption, he, too, taught daily classes in religion, preached the Gos-
pel, and won souls for Christ and members for the Lutheran
Church. Several years ago the authorities at Piney Woods decided,
for reasons perhaps best known only to themselves, to turn the
teaching of religion and all religious activities at the institution
over to another religious group, known as the Pioneer Gospel
Mission. (The Lutheran Church was permitted to hold regular

request of the Missionary Board by the Rev. Wm. F. Wedig, assisted
by the undersigned. When Rev. Wm. F. Wedig accepted a call to
New Orleans, the undersigned was asked to carry on.

But it seems that the Pioneer Gospel Mission’s stay at Piney

a time which did not interfere with the other activities of the
school.)

Up until 1953 we had the opportunity and found the time to
conduct a Bible class in addition to our regular service. But with
a re-arrangement of the school schedule and the addition of new

BAe

a service which is more or less compulsory,

In spite of difficulties and handicaps, we continue to carry on,
confident that our labors for the Lord will not be in vain and hop-
ing that the day will come when we have the opportunity to con-
duct a much-needed Bible class again in addition to our regular
worship service, B. L. Taompson
