142 Proceedings of the Forty-Third Convention,
since 1925. Miss Emma Potter, a daughter of Mount Zion, has
been teaching in Mount Zion School since 1942. We were very for-
for the faithful service these teachers have rendered unto us.
For more than twenty-five years Pastor O. W. Luecke had
faithfully served the congregation. On account of illness he was
compelled to resign his position as pastor. For many months the
congregation was without a shepherd. Vicar Nathaniel Richmond
served the congregation well until his return to Greensboro in
the fall of 1952 to complete his theological training. On Decem-
ber 14 the undersigned, who had been sent by the Missionary Board
to assist Rev. Kramer in the Louisiana area, was installed as the
.pastor of Mount Zion Lutheran Church. By the grace and help of
God, Mount Zion Church and School will continue to enlarge
Christ’s kingdom on earth. V.E. Morrrz, Pastor
Calvary, Baton Rouge, La.
Calvary, sometimes referred to as the “neglected child” on the
Louisiana Field, has a new start.
For thirty or more years, Pastors C. P. Thompson, G. M. Kramer,
L. H. Robinson, and the undersigned conducted Sunday afternoon
services bimonthly in rented churches, school halls, and private
homes. The results were oftentimes very discouraging. But we felt
that the fast-growing capital city should have the voice of the
Reformation testifying.
In August, 1953, the Honorable Missionary Board sent a vicar
to this station. Preparations had been made to relocate in a former
GI school building. The relocation services were held with pastors
and member from all our congregations in Louisiana in attendance.
The “two old-timers,” Pastors G. M. Kramer and C. P. Thompson.
were the principal speakers. The New Orleans Lutheran Choral
Group rendered beautiful selections. Visitors were impressed.
Calvary had had a new birth.
For an on-the-spot coverage we quote from Vicar William
Young’s report:
“Perhaps we could summarize our work in no better fashion
than by recalling the promise of our Lord made many years ago,
‘For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My
kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant
of My peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.’
That promise to us our Lord has kept in a wonderful way. It was
only by His mercy that we have lived and worked and prayed
during the past nine months.
“If we remember the year for nothing more, surely we will
always recall the fact that the Lord permitted the Missionary Board
to purchase a building for our congregation.
“During the course of nine months, nine communicant members
were received, four children and four adults were baptized. How
we rejoiced as we witnessed the answer to our prayer, ‘Thy king-
dom come’! At this time we are engaged in work on the interior
of our unfinished building. We are looking forward toward the
dedication in the near future.”
In addition let us say thank you to Pastor G. A. Gatzke and
the members of First Lutheran Church of Baton Rouge for sup-
