13. CONVENTION NOMINATIONS
(13-01)
Report of Board for Convention Nominations
The authority, duties, and procedures relating to
the Board for Convention Nominations are set forth in
the Handbook of the Synod. They are specifically enu-
merated in paragraphs 2.141 to 2.153 under “Synodical
Administration” and in paragraph 6.27 under “Higher
Education.”
This board, elected at the New York convention in
1967, consists of 7 pastors, 3 teachers, and 5 laymen. It
organized on Oct. 5, 1967, when it met at the call of the
President of the Synod and named its chairman, record-
ing secretary, and corresponding secretary. Four addi-
tional meetings were held to thoroughly evaluate the
hundreds of recommendations and suggestions received
in response to solicitations made to Boards of Directors,
Boards of Control, District Presidents, executive secre-
taries, circuit counselors, LLL officers, and finally to all
the members and congregations of the Synod through
an invitation notice published in the Aug. 4, 1968, issue
of the Lutheran Witness Reporter,
Really what are the basic considerations which should
determine the action of a nominating board? The board
members gave much thought and study to this question
in their initial meetings. No magic formulas, electronic
computers, or mathematical equations can provide the
answers. However, board members believe that guide-
lines influencing nominations ought to include the fol-
lowing considerations:
1. Service to the Lord and His church through the
Synod can best be performed by men of proven dedica-
tion and abilities; men of good character who have
demonstrated their love and faithfulnes to God and His
Word and find joy in serving Him.
2. A man can serve best in the sphere for which nat-
ural disposition and divine endowment have fitted him;
such individuals must be sought out.
3. There must be judicious balance as to age, geo-
graphic distribution, experience in board process, socio-
economic distribution, and avoidance of conflict of in-
terest where a prospective candidate may hold a parallel
position in a District or other activity of the Synod.
Candidate profiles, “job descriptions,” and informa-
tion from knowledgeable persons, such as District Presi-
dents and pastors, have been carefully and thoroughly
studied by the Board for Convention Nominations and
have been important factors influencing the judgment
of the board. Nevertheless, we are aware of our own
inadequacies and limitations, and we implore the bless-
ings of almighty God on the decisions which in the final
analysis are committed to Him who, we pray, will guide
the delegates in their determinations at the convention
in Denver.
The official slates proposed by the Board for Conven-
tion Nominations are listed herewith.
