MISSIONS 55
not in pulpit and altar fellowship and thus subsidizing
the campus ministries of such Lutheran bodies; and
Wuereas, This creates a compromising and impos-
sible situation for all those congregations that properly
seek a ministry for their students that is an extension
of their local position and work, not that of a “general
Lutheran” church; and
Wuereas, Instead of affirming its responsibility to
“advise the Districts and their campus pastors of syn-
odical principles,” the Synod’s Board for Missions gave
assent to the previous improper advice of its executive
secretary that the District could accept the alternatives
of “setting up a common budget based on communicant
membership and the various Campus Ministries would
be subsidized from this common pool... . The Division
of Education of the Lutheran Church in Canada would
be the Administrative structure through which we
wou!d work. We would set up a special Ontario Board,
composed of representatives of all the synods, to ad-
minister the program”; and
Whereas, Other Districts such as the Atlantic Dis-
trict, the Alberta and British Columbia District, and
other areas are also following this joint or unified ap-
proach with one Lutheran ministry supported by a
pan-Lutheran committee acting as a church within
churches; and
Wuereas, The Atlantic District Memorial 1-11 to the
New York convention (Workbook, p.44) requesting
authorization for such unified or joint work was an-
swered explicitly by convention Resolution 3-20, which
extends approval only to consultation and coordination
in cooperative affairs; therefore be it
Resolved, That the Synod in its convention reaffirm
New York convention Resolution 3-20 and the CTCR
document, “Policy Statement on Campus Ministry”; and
be it further
Resolved, That the Board for Missions and all Dis-
tricts be asked to abide faithfully to the adopted prin-
ciples of coordination and consultation in their coopera-
tion with other Lutheran bodies and avoid all forms of
joint or unified campus ministries which amount to
pulpit and altar fellowship. Rev. Joun Korcox
Kitchener, Ont.

To Observe Bible Translation Day
Wuereas, There are still 1,800 tribes in the world
without one word of Scripture, since their languages
have never been written down, and
Wuereas, Giving people the Word of God in their
own language and teaching them to read it is essential
to the establishment of a strong indigenous church; and
Wuereas, Evangelical missionaries are finding it in-
creasingly difficult to get into many countries; and
Wuereas, Literacy workers and Bible translators
have recently been admitted into such countries as
Russia, Afghanistan, India, and Nepal, which are gen-
erally closed to Christian missions; and
Wuereas, A tremendous effort is urgently needed
to recruit, train, and send out translators, literacy
workers, and support personnel to reach every tribe in
this generation; and
Wuereas, Messengers of Christ Lutheran Bible
Translators now has more than 25 workers on the
field and more than 50 others in training and expects
to double this number within the coming year; and
Wuereas, The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod,
in convention in Detroit in 1965, passed Resolution
1-34: “That the Board for Missions be urged to use
the services of Messengers of Christ, Inc., or any other
similar agency, as the need may arise”; and
Wuereas, The United States Senate, in April 1967,
adopted joint resolution 76 authorizing President John-
son to declare September 30 as Bible Translation Day;
therefore be it
Resolved, That congregations be urged to keep the
need for Bible translators, literacy workers, and sup-
port personnel constantly before their members, that
every effort may be made to recruit workers from their
midst and to support them with their prayers and with
their gifts; and be it further
Resolved, That every congregation be urged to ob-
serve the nearest Sunday to September 30 each year as
Bible Translation Day and to remember this work with
their prayers and with their gifts to Messengers of
Christ — Lutheran Bible Translators.
