Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Note b. Causes of this are 1. lack of pastors. — If merely half of the money that the moving of pastors costs were devoted to the training institutions and education of preachers, the frequent changing would soon be reduced. 2. frivolity of pastors, who often take up the wandering staff for the sake of trifling external advantages. — Since the counsel of the officers is often not sought, pastors often come to places to which they are not equal. 3. the treatment that congregation members sometimes give their pastor. They often do not do their duty and have much to pick at in the pastor. Note c. Already in earthly occupations the rule holds that one should not flutter frivolously from one calling to another. Note d. That sectarian preachers change every few years is not to be wondered at. They do not set themselves the task of proclaiming the whole counsel of God, but of working upon the feelings. For that something new is always needed.

19. Die Verſetzung iſt Gottes Sache

19. Die Verſetzung iſt Gottes Sache. Da die Paſtoren Diener Gottes ſind, von Gott berufen, ſo kann auch Gott allein ſeine Prediger verſetzen. Paſtor und Ge⸗— meindeglieder müſſen bei Berufung immer fragen: Was will Gott? Anm.

19. The transfer is God's affair. Since pastors are servants of God, called by God, God alone can also transfer his preachers. Pastor and congregation members must always ask, in a matter of calling: What does God want? Note. Therefore pastors and teachers should also not take steps on their own authority to get away from their post. If circumstances arise that make a blessed work at their place impossible for them from then on, they may report this to their president; otherwise, however, they should wait in patience to see how God will carry the matter forward.

Anm. a.

20. What should not be given consideration in accepting a call. What is decisive in the acceptance or refusal of a call should not be a. covetousness, when the new or the old call offers more salary, external, earthly advantages. We should remain at the post where God wants to have us, even if we could have it better elsewhere. Note. If, to be sure, a pastor or teacher with a large family and small salary cannot make ends meet, and his small congregation is not able to provide properly for the pastor's family, this can be a reason for transfer. Note b. How often must a pastor move from a richer congregation into a poorer one, where he has a larger field of work. Note c. Congregation members often think: If the pastor improves his situation, we cannot keep him; b. ambition, when the new call brings with it more prestige; c. love of comfort. Less work. Yet the case can occur that the pastor's strength no longer suffices for a large congregation, and he for that reason longs for a smaller congregation with less work; d. fear of the cross. A pastor should not leave his congregation because of unpleasantness and various infirmities in it, or give way for the sake of a few wicked persons. Matt. 10:16. Note. Often the cross in the congregation is the pastor's own fault; Relatives and acquaintances. Note a. Parents should not make it difficult for their sons to accept a call far away. Note b. The wishes of one's own wife cannot be taken into consideration, unless it concerns her health. Note c. Also greater association with friends and fellow ministers cannot be decisive. 21. What should be taken into consideration: a. the pastor's gifts, which might perhaps be put to better use in another place, or might not. Note. The judgment on this does not rest with the pastor alone. He could suffer either from self-conceit or from excessive modesty; b. the benefit that accrues to the church through the transfer of a pastor. The gifts should show themselves for the common good. The question is not whether pastor and congregation benefit, but whether the church has benefit. Note a. To want to go to a place where one can create more benefit is a permissible desire. Note b. The congregation should not call anyone away from his post for its own sake, but should keep in view the welfare of the whole church. Objection. Where one can create the most benefit is known to God alone; c. the larger or more important field of work. For this reason Jonah was called to Nineveh. What would have become of Luther, if he had remained in his monastery chapel! A great light confined to a small room! Note a. The fields of work are various. Note b. A field of work is more important when it is either considerably larger, or bound up with particular difficulties and dangers, e.g., division, apostasy, if a pastor does not come soon. Note c. A larger or more important field of work is not in itself decisive. The pastor must also possess the necessary gifts for it; d. the relationship in which the pastor stands to his own congregation. If confidence in the pastor has dwindled, if a certain hostility toward his person is present, if the pastor can no longer properly work in blessing, this is a reason for accepting the call. Note a. Yet a congregation should not lose confidence in the pastor over every trifle. Note b. If it is a matter of hostility toward the pastor's doctrine, then he should not give way; e. the pastor's strength and state of health. Sometimes a transfer is necessary because conditions in a congregation change and the pastor's strength no longer suffices. Note a. If a pastor has an ailment that would presumably be relieved in another place, he may take this into consideration. Change of climate. Note b. Also, a pastor should not leave unhealthy places without necessity; f. the condition of his congregation. If one's own congregation would be exposed to great danger through a longer vacancy, this is a reason to remain. God does not wish to build his kingdom in one place while it is being destroyed in another. Note a. Given our shortage of preachers, one should not leave a preacher with a small handful who despise God's word, while in other places large, populous congregations hunger for God's word. Note b. The main rules concerning transfer can be briefly summarized thus: 1. The pastor should never himself seek to get away. 2. He should not give way for the sake of the wicked. 3. The new field must be more important, and the pastor must be suited for it. 4. He should not decide by himself alone. 5. He should not go without the consent of his congregation. Note c. As for the holding of school, no rule can be established as to how far it should be taken into consideration in a call.

22. How can one find out whether one should follow a call as a divine call or not? One is helped by a. careful comparison of the new call with the old, b. fervent prayer, c. the judgment of other Christians. § 15. Note a. A call and a temptation must be distinguished. Before a call reaches the right person, it may come to other persons for their testing. Note b. If both calls, the old as well as the new, are roughly equal, and there are neither particular reasons to leave the congregation nor to follow the new call, then the present call is always the more important one. Note c. If the matter is doubtful, then the pastor does better to remain where he is. He must be certain of his position and be able to say: God has led me here. Note d. The pastor may set forth the reasons of the calling congregation before his own congregation, and thus represent the calling congregation. Note e. If a candidate receives a call from the distribution committee and at the same time one directly from a congregation, the latter has as yet no preference over the former.

24. The call should be laid before the congregation. Only in exceptional cases, where, for example, the congregation has just been unsettled by several calls, and the situation is clear from the outset that one must decline again, could the congregation be spared further unsettlement. If a pastor has laid the call before his congregation, the following four cases can arise: 1. the congregation gives its consent. 2. it insists that the pastor remain, 3. it is of divided opinion, some for, some against acceptance, 4. it leaves the decision to the pastor. Note a. The pastor should seek to obtain the congregation's consent and not regard it lightly. The pastor should not leave without a peaceful dismissal. If a pastor cannot convince the congregation of the divinity of the call, this is a reason to remain. Note b. To make the decision on the acceptance of a call wholly dependent on the congregation's consent is fitting only where one is not himself certain of the matter. Note e. A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here.
