THE LUTHERAN PIONEER.
to have 40,000 miles of river and lake navigation,
and its water-power is immense.
Of its mineral wealth it may be said that it has
800,000 square miles of coal-fields, as many copper-
fields as Europe and the United States together, and
its iron ore deposits are five times greater than those
of our country. The annual export of cocoa from
the so-called Gold Coast amounts to more than
$8,000,000.
In Western Africa there are vast stretches of ter-
ritory where a person can travel four hundred to
five hundred miles without meeting a Christian mis-
sionary. In this part of Africa there is an area of
200,000 square miles, that is, a territory equal to the
combined areas of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Ken-
tucky, which has not one missionary, and another
area, even four times greater, which is wholly un-
occupied by Christian workers. It is possible to
travel 1,500 miles from the Mediterranean Sea
southward without coming to a single mission-
station; and one can travel eastward from Cape
Verde a distance of more than 2,000 miles and never
come within hundreds of miles of a mission-station.
On the average, Africa has one missionary for every
130,000 persons. What a field! F. J.L.

Bible History References. Vol. II: New Testament Sto-
ries. By F. Rupprecht. With maps and illustrations.
Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, Mo. Cloth.
472 pages. Price, $2.50.
The pastor or teacher who must get along without the
help of Rupprecht’s two volumes of Bible History Ref-
erences is lacking the use of a most useful tool. It is
simply marvelous what an amount of useful information
the author has succeeded in compressing into the pages
of these two volumes. Sunday-school teachers will also
find the two volumes most valuable in preparing their
lessons. Buy, read, and be convinced!
Foreign Missions in China. Five lectures by Frederick
Brand. Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, Mo.
31 pages. Price, 20 cts.
These five lectures were delivered over KFUO in Jan-
uary of this year by Director Brand of the Missouri
Synod’s Foreign Missions. The subjects of the five in-
tensely interesting lectures are as follows: “My Trip to
China”; “The Need of Foreign Missions, or the Mission-
ary Motive”; “Survey of Christian Missionary Activity
in China from Apostolic Times”; “The Effect of Protes-
tant Missions in China”; “The Present Political Unrest
in China and Foreign Missions.”
Tus Pecados te Son Perdonados. La Justificacion del
Pecador delante de Dios. Por H. M. Gehrt, Pastor
Evangelico-Luterano. Order from.Rev. P. F. Harre,
Villa Iris, F. C. S., Argentina, South America.
This is a tract of fourteen pages. It treats of the
heart of Christian doctrine: the justification of the sin-
ner before God. It is written in Spanish and is published
by the Mission Board of the Missouri Synod in Argentina.
Its publication is an indication that the work among the
Spanish-speaking people of Argentina is to be enlarged
and expanded. God grant success to the CAT
