12 THE LUTHERAN PIONEER.

If we could relieve this congregation of its interest
charges, a school could be started, and the Lord’s
work would no doubt go on rapidly. Here again
the Church Extension Fund could come to the
rescue if it had any funds at its disposal.

Tinally, in another city there is only one
church of the Synodical Conference. Fortunately
it is centrally located, but the church-building is in
a dilapidated condition. In fact, it is unsafe. This
small congregation is anxious to put its house of
worship in order, so that it will appeal to the many
strangers and guests who come there. But it needs
some assistance, and at present the Church Ex-
tension Fund is without funds.

Should not these five cases be enough to show
us that the call for funds for church extension is
proper and that the call should be heeded ?

Foreign Missions of Iowa Synod. — ‘Together
with a Lutheran church-body in Australia the
Towa Synod is conducting a very successful mission
in New Guinea. This mission came into the hands
of Jowa as the result of the World War and

Chalmers, the Martyr Missionary of New Guinea.

the seventh and eighth grades have been dropped.
A loan from the Church Extension Fund would
save the day.

In another large city one of our mission-
churches has held its services and had its school
in a basement for a number of years. The place is
poorly lighted, and it is hard to heat it properly.
And since it is wholly unfit for a school, the con-
gregation has had to drop the school temporarily.
In this section the sects all have fine churches.
A loan from the Church Extension Fund is all this
mission needs.

Two years ago a Sunday-school of sixty-four
children was started in another city by one of our
missionaries. However, since no suitable place
could be found, a friendly Jew permitted the school
to meet in a vacant store for an entire year without
asking rent. In the mean time a small congregation
and a small day-school have been started. And the
congregation has purchased a site for a church.
However, it cannot proceed without a loan from
the Church Extension Fund.

In another city we have but one Lutheran
church. It was started by neighboring congrega-
tions. The congregation would like very much to
start a school, but the interest on its church debt
makes it practically impossible for it to proceed. View of Interior of New Guinea.
