114 Proceedings of the Forty-First Convention,
Lutheran Academy at Selma, and to Mobile, Ala. These new loans, made
during the fiscal year, amount to $41,000. All loans are current, and re-
payments are being made on them regularly.
Memphis, Tenn., Mission School Project. This project was temporarily
financed by funds from our Church Extension Fund. The present unpaid
balance of this project is $20,973.82 (see Exhibit “A”). Many checks were
received from all sections of the United States as partial payments on this
project, and the debt, as a result of these collections, has been reduced by
$8,000. Permission was obtained from the officers of the various Districts
of the constituent Synods before collections for this project from societies
and individuals were begun.
Budget Disbursements, Domestic Missions. Compared with the fiscal
year 1949, expenditures this year were $8,000 more. Increased costs were
indicated in colleges, stations, administrative expenses, and Church Ex-
tension Fund contributions. Our expansion project this year amounted to
$14,430.24 as compared with $15,081.77 last year. The Missionary Board’
granted salary increases from time to time, but in spite of those increases
total salaries expended were about the same as last year. This is caused
by numerous vacancies in the field, especially in Alabama. Other costs
were about the same as during the previous fiscal year. For the purpose
of making comparisons, total budget disbursements are listed according
to fiscal years as follows:
1938—39 $ 88,323.63 1944—45 $ 97,078.44
1939—40 . 85,282.70 1945—46 . 97,655.81
1940—41 - 89,779.35 1946—47 _ 140,023.76

Budget Disbursements, African Missions. Total expenditures for
the fiscal year 1950 amount to $85,137.98 as compared with $86,587.37 last
year. Increases in costs were in equipment, buildings, and parsonages.
Decreases were in salaries and travel to and from Africa. Several of our
missionaries could not return to the field in Africa due to illness. Two
of these missionaries have been temporarily placed in the domestic mis-
sion field and their salaries, therefore, charged to Domestic Mission
Budget Disbursements. This accounts for the decrease in the total ex-
pended for salaries. However, the Missionary Board has sent out addi-
tional workers this year, and consequently our expenditures for salaries
will be substantially greater for the fiscal year 1951. Budget disburse-
ments are presented in detail for comparison: ,
1941—42 $ 10,701.98 $ 68,122.74
- 14,278.16 57,902.28
12,225.19 86,587.37
20,252.00 85,137.98
38,872.18 ,
The Board is faced with the problem of providing additional per-
manent homes for our missionaries and has included in our budget for
the fiscal year 1950—51 the sum of $22,000: $2,000 for five bush houses at
$400 each and $20,000 for four permanent homes at $5,000 each. Housing
is desperately needed on the field so that new workers with their families
may have homes in which to live.
All other exhibits are self-explanatory, and no additional comments
are necessary. Should more information be desired, or should you have
any questions regarding the report, your inquiry will be given our im-
mediate attention. Respectfully submitted,
CaaRLEs E. Groericu, Treasurer
