Ev. Luth. Synodical Conference of North America. 1950 93

Southeastern District of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod,
soliciting the interest and support of the congregations of that
District. The convention of the Southeastern District, held in
June of 1949, adopted the following resolution:

Wuereas, Immanuel Lutheran College of Greensboro, N.C., an edu-
cational institution operated by the Synodical Conference for the educa-
tion of our Negro youth, but chiefly for the training of young men for
the ministry, is located within the area of the Southeastern District; and

Wuereas, Our District has agreed to supervise and direct the Negro
missions within the area of our District; and

Wuergas, The training of young men for the ministry as well as an
educated laity is vital to the progress and growth of this phase of the
District’s mission work; and

Wuereas, Other Districts of Synod take a direct interest in such
educational institutions in their areas; be it

Resolved, (1) That the congregations of the Southeastern District
be informed of the existence of Immanuel Lutheran College of Greens-
boro, N.C., as being within the geographical area of the District and
deserving of their interest and support; and (2) that the congregations
of the Southeastern District be urged to send contributions to Immanuel
Lutheran College (either for the commissary, athletics, music, or the
general operating expense) or to send foodstuffs for the commissary.”

The minutes of the College Board state in this connection:
“On the strength of this resolution Dean Lynn was encouraged
to visit congregations of the District and bring the needs of I. L. C.
before the people.”

We recommend to other Districts of the constituent synods of
the Synodical Conference, who have a direct interest in Negro
work in their areas, that they, too, bring to the attention of their
congregations the work of I.L.C. and adopt similar resolutions.
Manpower is extremely short. Since these Districts will need pas-
tors and missionaries, trained at I.L.C., we urge that they assist
in solving this problem by soliciting young men of Negro congre-
gations and missions to study for the ministry.

The Faculty

The College Board agreed to the plan of the Missionary Board
to grant Dr. Nau a leave of absence, to serve under the Board
for Foreign Missions of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod,
to establish missions among the Mohammedans. Dr. Nau was
granted a leave of absence for one year. At the same time-he was
transferred to the payroll of that Board. Before assuming his new
duties Dr. Nau requested to be relieved of the presidency of I.L.C.,
in which he had served 24 years, submitting his resignation at the
close of May, 1949. The College Board, with the consent of the
Missionary Board, accepted the resignation of Dr. Nau, giving him
recognition for his many years of faithful. service in behalf of
I. L. C. and wishing him:God’s protection and blessing in this new
undertaking. He was assured ‘that on his return from this tour
he could join the faculty as theological professor. He will resume
his duties as such in September of 1950.

The College Board considered it advisable to ask for delay in
the calling of a new president, and earnest study was given to
this question over a period of several months. The Missionary
Board has published the request for candidates for this position
