Ev. Luth. Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States. 1923. 94
‘gecond Plan Submitted by the Architect. Committee Stands
by First Design and is Supported by Board of Directors. .
‘During the months of April and May the architect worked up
cond set of plans. The preliminary drawings and specifications
" dormitory for fifty students were first submitted and were imme-
ttely given into the hands of a competent contractor for a tenta-
pid. Drawings and blue-prints of academic set of buildings —
aministration Building, Lecture Halls, Auditorium, Library, Ser-
- ~e Building, Dining-halls — were received May 12 and were studied
“iby the Committee at a meeting May 14. At this time the contractor’s
‘estimate of the dormitory was received. His figure is $82,360, or
$656,000: for the eight dormitories needed for 400 students. To this
amount must be added the cost of the other buildings, grading, ete.,
bringing the total to $2,129,000. The designs submitted are in a
modified and very simple Colonial. The buildings are, in accordance
’-with this style, rectangular blocks without the least indication of,
their purpose or use. The roofs are flat.
a While the Committee convinced itself that the architect’s firm
has done excellent work in planning the layout also. of this scheme,
and while the substitution of the buildings in Scheme IT for those of
- Scheme I would mean a saving of several hundred thousand dollars,
-the Committee did not feel that it should, on account of such saving,
“ xeport to Synod the second and much inferior plan. Both designs
‘eall for fire-proof construction. The second, however, is immeas-
urably inferior to the first when considered as a plan for a theological
seminary. The Committee does not believe that Synod wants to
build in the style of Scheme II. It believes that the same emphasis
which our Church has ever laid on proper churchly architecture in
erecting church-buildings should apply in the case of our new Semi-—
nary, as it did in the case of our present Seminary building. .The
J Committee believes that a dotting of grounds with several dozen
: large square buildings mostly with flat roofs would not be, such.
'.@ group as our people want. It believes that the two designs should
be submitted to the convention at Eort Wayne, not as if they were
equally recommended, but to demonstrate the sincerity of its efforts
to reduce the cost. It should be said that the architect assures us
that very material reductions, possibly $150,000, can be made in the
details of the first design. Of this the Committee was assured by
& representative of the firm May 14. :
The following resolutions were adopted by the Committee
May 15:— ~
1) That with certain modifications, amounting possibly © to
$150,000, the first design submitted be adopted. ,
2) That the construction of this group be begun as soon as in
-the opinion of the Board of Directors and of the Committee the time -
is advantageous.
