Anm. a. Anm. a. 5. can keep themselves free from false doctrine, 6. can examine their preachers. Note c. Complaint that the Book of Concord is so unknown a book among Christians 1. at the time of the founding of the church in this country, 2. in our own time. Note d. The Book of Concord should be in every home. Note e. The pastor should work toward having the confessions become truly known to all members of the congregation. Note f. This is also why the Augsburg Confession and Luther's Catechism have been included in the hymnal. Objection. It is said that the confessions are only for pastors and teachers. — They are for every Lutheran, and can also be understood by everyone, since they raise no overly subtle questions. 12. Only that fellowship has a claim to the names faithful-to-the-confession or Lutheran which a. confesses all the confessions of the Lutheran church without restriction, b. does not have the confessions merely officially on paper, as a signboard, but rather c. brings its whole practice into agreement with them, and 1. actually preaches accordingly, 2. accepts only teachers faithful to the confession, 3. maintains fellowship only with those faithful to the confession. Note a. Whoever wishes to be faithful to the confession must 1. truly hold Scripture to be God's Word and renounce all human glosses, 2. reject all deviations from the confession. Note b. There are nowadays many fellowships that call themselves Lutheran, but which 1. do not accept the confessions at all. Their motto is: Away with the confession. Note a. In doing so they claim to be fighting for the truth and against error. Note b. To false Lutherans the confessions are a thorn in the eye: 2. accept the confessions, to be sure, but not in all their parts; they regard the doctrine contained in them as unsound; 3. give the lie to the confessions through false practice, since they either tolerate false doctrine in their midst or maintain pulpit and altar fellowship with those of false belief. Note a. False practice shows that the confession does not come from the heart either. Note b. With such people we cannot work
