Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

38. Words of distribution. a. The formula of distribution belongs 1. Not to the essence of the sacrament. 2. It is a matter of Christian freedom. 3. It is meant to be a confession. 4. Historical matters. a. In apostolic times: The body of Christ — the blood of Christ, the cup of life. b. In the 6th century: The body of our Lord Jesus preserve you unto eternal life. c. In Luther's time: The same. b. The Lutheran formula: The true body. This arose 1. Toward the end of the 16th century. 2. It is a confession against the Reformed. Note. In Saxony the word “true” was dropped again, so as not to wound the feelings of those who thought differently. Objection: The words “the true body” are a falsification of Scripture. Against this: 1. It is only another expression of what Christ says. 2. We leave the words of institution unfalsified in the Bible. 3. At the distribution we use not the words of institution but our confession. (This objection therefore rests on a confusion between the Word and the confession.) 4. If our formula of distribution is unbiblical because of the word “true,” then the united formula is likewise unbiblical because of the addition: “Christ says.” c. The united formula: Christ says. 1. Historical matters: a. This already occurs in some Zwinglian church orders. Note. Melanchthon lent his hand to this. b. It was taken up by the Rationalists. c. Adopted into the Prussian church order. d. Into the Pennsylvania church order, 1818. Note. The first edition, 1786, was Lutheran. 2. Its meaning is: Christ does indeed say this, but you may now take it as you like. Note a. Here all confession has vanished. Note b. The Union people act like the Jews: that he had said he was King of the Jews. 3. This formula is to be rejected, not in itself and unconditionally, but because of the circumstances under which it was introduced. For it comes

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
