154 THE LUTHERAN PIONEER.
Much joy was brought to the hearts of all
assembled when Rev. G. A. Schmidt reported that
the chapel at Kings Landing in which Conference
was held had been built by the Colored Lutherans
of Alabama. He also stated that there was a small
deficit, and Conference resolved to wipe out this
deficit.
From Thursday afternoon, August 27, to Sun-
day evening, August 30, a number of splendid and
inspiring sermons and papers were heard by those
who attended the various meetings.
Time and space will not permit my going into
detail about all that transpired at Kings Landing:
however, a few words concerning the papers and
Lorena Madison’s paper, “Establishing Night-
schools for Adults,” aroused great interest and
much discussion. Upon hearing the last paper,
Conference resolved to establish night-schools for
adults wherever possible.
On Saturday afternoon the Sunday-school con-
vention was held. ‘The convention heard an address
by the chairman, Mr. Nathan Ramsey, and several
splendid papers, by which all were greatly edified.
A resolution was passed to purchase an appropriate
Sunday-school banner, which is to be held for one
year by whatever Sunday-school had the highest
attendance, received the greatest number of new
pupils, and collected the largest sum of money for
Congregation at Kings Landing, Ala.
In this new church the meetings of Luther Conference were held.
resolutions adopted will, I am sure, be of interest
to you. —
Among the papers which created a great interest
and evoked a lively discussion was the one read by
Superintendent G. A. Schmidt on “This Year’s
Harvest Home and Mission Festival Collection.”
After hearing and discussing this paper, Conference
resolved that all collections raised at the various
harvest home and mission-festivals in “Alabama be
given for mission-work in Africa.
Another paper of interest was Prof. P. D. Leh-
man’s essay on “Good Works.” He answered the
following questions: 1. What is a good work?
2. Who can perform a good work? 3. Why do
Christians perform good works?
Rey. John Thompson’s essay on “Absolution
Spoken by the Pastor” was heard with interest.
The paper of Teacher Bettie Skinner, “Getting
Children to Attend School Regularly,” and Teacher
the year. It is hoped that this will stimulate an
interest in Sunday-school work.
On Sunday: morning, August 30, a very solemn
and impressive service was held. The little chapel
was filled to its capacity. Holy Communion was
.celebrated, and nearly a hundred persons partook
of the Lord’s body and blood. ‘The confessional
address was delivered by Rev. P. J. Weeke and the
sermon of the morning by Rev. G. Kreft, who is:to
be the pastor of the Kings Landing congregation.
In the afternoon Rev. P. J. Weeke delivered an
inspiring sermon to another packed house. While
service was held in.the chapel, another service was
held at a little graveyard about two miles from the
chapel. One of the members of the little mission
had been called from this vale of tears. Over the
grave of the departed member, to an assembly of
about 150 people, Rey. G. A. Schmidt held up Jesus
Christ as the only Savior of sinners.
