Our Great Outdoors. Reptiles, Amphibians, and Fishes.
By C. W. G. Eifrig, Instructor in Nature Study, River
Forest, Ill. Rand, MeNally & Co., Chicago, Ill. Richly
illustrated; 250 pages. List price, $1.28. Order from
Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, Mo.
Only a lover of the great outdoors can write a book
like this, the second of a series of monographs. The
sympathetic interest of the author in the animals he de-
seribes is revealed on every page. The reader cannot
get rid of the idea that Professor Eifrig is not writing
merely for the sake of getting a book on the market,
but that he wants to create in his reader a kindly in-
terest in the stealthy serpent, the swift lizard, and the
elusive fish. A teacher of science who examined the book
expressed the opinion that the author has in it made
a valuable contribution to nature study and that its use
as a text-book will go far to remove the prejudice so
many people have against reptiles and amphibians and
in its place create and foster a kindly feeling towards
these misjudged creatures. The author’s animated de-
scriptions and sympathetic presentation throughout give
us assurance that here is a text-book that the child will
read with delight. We express the hope that author and
publisher will be encouraged to enlarge the series of Our
Great Outdoors by the publication of other books by Pro-
fessor Eifrig. F.J.L.
