THE LUTHERAN PIONEER.

e60—eS6t——teeaeoeos$S$@S~$ S$Somooooaoaoaoaoaoaoaoamamwawawawswwseoe®oeoeleemaoaecovneets$=o

An Appreciation. — Said President William
MeKinley: “The services and sacrifices of mission-
aries for their fellow-men constitute one of the most
glorious pages of history. These noble, self-effacing,
willing ministers of peace and good will should be
classed among the world’s greatest heroes. ... They
have prompted concord and amity, made men better,
and brought nations and races closer together.”

BOOK TABLE.:

Gustav <Adoli, the Greatest Lu-
By William Dallmann. Concordia
128 pages; green

The Midnight Lion.
theran Layman.
Publishing House, St. Louis, Mo.
cloth binding. Price, 75 cts.

Almost a hundred years to the day after the presenta-
tion of the Augsburg Confession, it was when Gustavus

Adolphus landed on the Pomeranian island of Usedom at

the head of 16,000 soldiers to take a hand in the Thirty

Years’ War. For this reason the appearance of this brief

biography from the hand of Dr. Dallmann is most timely,

since the quadricentennial of the Augustana is the tri-
centenary of the entrance of Gustavus Adolphus into the
war that had for its purpose the extermination of Lu-
theranism, a purpose that, humanly speaking, would have
been attained if the Lion from the North had not come
to the rescue. The book is written in the author’s usual
vivid and racy style.

Lektionsbuch fuer Schule und Haus. Neu bearbeitet
yon Wm. H. Luke. Concordia Publishing House,
St. Louis, Mo. Price: Single copies, 30 cts.; dozen
lots, @ 24 cts.; hundred lots, @ 20 cts.

This is a revision of a book published some years ago.
Its purpose is to systematize the memory work of the
Sunday-school, Saturday-school, and summer-school and
also to be of help in the home of the child. The memory
material is divided into three classes, designated by means
of three kinds of type. The material is taken from the
Bible, the Catechism, and the Hymnal. Bible-story ref-
erences are also given. The whole course is divided into
forty-four lessons. We hope that the publishers will be
encouraged to put out an English edition of the book in
the near future. 3

Tokens of Salvation. By 0. C. Schroeder. Wartburg
Publishing House, 201S—2020 Calumet Ave., Chi-
cago, Ill. Price not given.

This pamphlet of forty-seven pages has for its author
our zealous missionary among the deaf-mutes, Pastor O. C.
Schroeder. “This treatise has been prepared for mission-
ary purposes and is intended for use in directing the friv-
olous to spiritual realities and the confused to the only
Anchor of hope and true happiness, the Bible, God’s own
Word.” The book is written by one whose soul is longing
for the salvation of men, a fact which shows itself on
every page.

Published by the Board of Christian Education of
the Missouri Synod. Order from Mr. A. C. Stellhorn,
Secretary of Schools, 604 S. Maple Ave., Oak Park,
Ill. Price, $1.00 a hundred.

A well-written tract. Its author is the efficient Super-
intendent of Schools in the Northern Mlinois District of
the Missouri Synod. Mr. Buszin here makes a most elo-
quent plea for the parochial school as the best agency
for the Christian school-training of the child next to the
Christian home.
