Greetings—The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod
Foundation
David Fiedler, president of the LCMS Foundation,
greeted the convention on behalf of his synodwide corporate
entity. He emphasized two things it does: first, to help LCMS
members to create “wonderful estate gifts that take care of
their families and leave marvelous gifts to ministry;” second,
to provide investment management of these gifts when
received, along with other assets of the Church. He shared a
video of a gentleman for whom the Foundation has created
a “wonderful gift plan.” He closed by summarizing “the
heart” of the Foundation’s work: “serving donors who love
Jesus and their church and want to support it after they’ve
been called to heaven.”
Committee 7: University Education
The President recognized Chairman Scott R. Murray,
Third Vice-President, to begin the report of his committee.

Res. 7-01A, “To Recognize and Give Thanks for Work at
Concordia College—New York” (TB, 2B:309), was read and
introduced by the committee.
It was moved to amend the resolution by inserting, at TB
2B:309, after line 28, the additional resolve:
Resolved, That a study be performed regarding
the closures of Concordia College Alabama;
Concordia College—New York; and Concordia
University, Portland, by an independent
investigative source that is approved by the Council
of Presidents, and include a determination of the
causes of closure for these institutions, analyze
commonalities, and make recommendations for
changes that will help prevent the future closures of
our other Concordia universities; and be it finally
The chair ruled the amendment not to be germane and
therefore out of order. It was moved and seconded to appeal
from the decision of the chair. The body sustained the
decision of the chair [Yes: 733, No: 250]. It was moved and
seconded to close debate; this was carried in a hand and
voice vote. Res. 7-01A was adopted in a hand and voice vote.
Res. 7-02A, “To Honor and Give Thanks for Ministry of

and introduced by the committee.
It was moved and seconded to amend the resolution to
add a second-last resolve: “That the Synod establish a
memorial fund to offer scholarships to incoming Concordia
University students in memory of the Concordia colleges
and universities that have recently closed.” At the request of
the committee, CFO Haak noted no cost to establishing an
endowment other than the funds to be added; he noted that
funds have devolved to the Concordia University System
that are used for such purposes. The chair put to the body
close of debate on the amendment; this was carried by voice
vote. The amendment failed [Yes: 402; No: 584]. The chair
put to the body close of debate on the resolution; this was
carried by voice vote. Res. 7-02A was adopted by a voice
vote.
After a video in “fond remembrance” of Concordia

the chair asked for and received unanimous consent to
correct an error earlier in the process of receiving floor
nominations, the effect of which is described above.
