of Tanzania—South East of Lake Victoria Diocese; Rev. Dr.
Bill Tackmier, Dean of Academics, Wisconsin Lutheran
Seminary, Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod; Rev. Dr.
David Wendel, Assistant to the Bishop for Ministry &
Ecumenism, North American Lutheran Church.
The committee was dismissed with thanks as to its
resolution work, the chair noting the role of the committee
(Bylaw 3.1.7 [g]), with the Chief Financial Officer and LCMS
Accounting staff, to review and attach to each recommended
resolution accompanying information on estimated cost.
Catechism—Learning by Heart
The chair introduced another commemorative church
partner greeting video.
With President Harrison relinquishing the chair to the
Rev. Dien Ashley Taylor, president of the Atlantic District,
the Rev. Peter Bender continued his catechesis on the basis
of Luther’s Small Catechism with Explanation. He likened
learning the catechism by heart, not to memorizing several
facts, but to learning by heart of those people and things we
love, as an organic whole—and at the center our Lord Jesus
Christ, who has redeemed us by his precious blood, to be his
own. We love Jesus because he first loved us—and he comes
through words, and at the center is the forgiveness of sins.
Bender traced this thought through the Ten
Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer. He explained how
behind all the positive exhortations of the Commandments
is the nature of the work our Lord Jesus Himself does for us.
They also display in the most beautiful terms what is to be
the Christian life. The Creed and the Lord’s Prayer and
Luther’s explanation thereof round out with the Gospel and
the work of the Spirit the whole of what we learn by heart.
Learning by heart is one thing; learning what it means goes
on and on. The synodical explanation unfolds Luther’s
concentrated explanations—and is accompanied by the
Catechism’s instruction on daily prayer.
Greetings—Lutheran Hour Ministries
Kurt Buchholz, president of Lutheran Hour Ministries,
offered the auxiliary’s greetings to the convention. He spoke
of the organization’s joy to be one of the two auxiliaries of
the Synod, to work with the Synod and its members and
ministries around the world, especially in its media
ministries, through which millions of people ask to know
more about Jesus Christ; hundreds of thousands are
connected with ministries; others are equipped to share
their faith. He shared a video, inviting a visit to www.lhm.org
to join in a journey of learning and faith. He thanked the
Synod for partnership in the Gospel, in bringing Christ to the
nations—and the nations to the Church.
Committee 8: Finance
With the President resuming the chair, the chair
recognized Chairman Roger C. Paavola, president of the
Mid-South District, to begin the report of his committee.
Res. 8-01, “To Respectfully Decline Overtures” (TB,
1:168), was read and introduced by the committee, with
Chairman Paavola separately offering an explanation of the
two overtures being declined. The overtures were therefore
handled severally: As to Ov. 8-01, after debate, the
declination of the overture was approved in a voice vote. As
to the Ov. 8-02, without debate, the declination of the
overture was approved in a voice vote.

Committee 14: Convention Nominations – Presentation of
Report and Floor Nominations for Other Boards and
Commissions
The chair called on Mr. Christian Preus, chairman of the
Committee for Convention Nominations, to present the
slate for the remaining positions to be elected and to prepare
the delegates to present floor nominations for such
according to the procedure of Standing Rule 26. Preus noted
the printed report of his committee in the Biographical
Synopses and Statements of Nominees and updates thereto in
Today’s Business Issues 2B and 3 (TB, 2B:345; 3:406). As
Chairman Preus did so, the President relinquished the chair
to Fifth Vice-President Esget. Preus presented the up-todate slate in Today’s Business, 3:397–405, reiterated the
instructions for submission of floor nominations, and
reminded delegates to review Tuesday’s Today’s Business for
information on such floor nominees as may issue. The chair
declared floor nominations in order for all boards and
commissions other than the Board of Directors.
