Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Note f. The examination must also be a right one. b. One should examine oneself as to whether one 1. Repents of one's sin. What is he to do with forgiveness who feels no sin? 2. Believes in Jesus. 3. Wants to amend one's life. Or we should examine ourselves regarding our past and future. Or: according to the Law (for which the examination questions in the Prayer Treasury 197—203, and also the Passion history, serve) and the Gospel (whether the fruits of faith are found, for the sake of which we go to the Lord's Supper). Note a. We should not measure ourselves by other people. Note b. True self-examination is a work of God. Note c. If we always judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. Note d. Whether a penitent conducts a proper self-examination withdraws itself from the pastor's judgment. But of this he should be certain, that a communicant is able to examine himself. Note e. The examination should, to be sure, not be conducted in a legalistic manner. Note f. Means of promoting self-examination are registration for confession and the confessional address. Note g. The examination of confirmands should demonstrate that they are able to examine themselves. 69. Careless reception. One should guard against careless reception of the Lord's Supper (1 Cor. 11:20—26, Mormons, Luth. 83, 110). Whoever goes carelessly to the Lord's Supper is, even if not continually, at least momentarily unworthy. Homiletics. A. Nature. Maundy Thursday. Epiphany.

1. Wichtigkeit. Anm. 1. Importance. The importance of this doctrine is evident from the fact that a. Christ longed for this meal with all his heart and instituted it as his final foundation even in the last hours before his death. b. The words of institution stand four times in Scripture. c. Paul received it specially from the Lord himself. d. It is a testament of the Lord. e. It is so greatly assailed by the devil. Note. The Lord's Supper is one of the sacraments. 2. Names. The Lord's Supper is called: Breaking of bread. Acts 2:42. The Lord's table. 1 Cor. 10:21. Communion. 1 Cor. 10:16. Supper. 1 Cor. 11:20. Thanksgiving. Eucharist. Ignatius. Mass. Luther. Aug. Conf. 4. Vorbilder

4. Vorbilder.

4. Types. The tree of life and the Passover can be regarded as types of the Lord's Supper. Some find an allusion to the Lord's Supper in the following verses: Ps. 22:27: The poor shall eat and be satisfied. Ps. 111:3: He has made a memorial of his wonders. Ps. 23:5: You prepare a table before me. 5. Sedes Doctrinae. As with every doctrine, one must here too go back to the true seat of the doctrine. It is a. not John 6; for 1. Christ spoke these words before the Lord's Supper was instituted. 2. According to John 6:53, salvation would be denied to all who do not partake of the Lord's Supper, e.g., our baptized children. Note. This is why the Greek Church and the Irvingites practice communion of infants. 3. According to John 6:54, every communicant would have eternal life, which cannot be said of the Lord's Supper. Note. John 6 deals only with spiritual eating and drinking, that is, with faith.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
