Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

4. all correct inferences. Whoever will not acknowledge the binding force of the correct inferences drawn from the Augsburg Confession is no true Lutheran. See Inferences. Note a. If one takes from the confession whatever one pleases, one practices hypocrisy, and the confessions are of no help to us at all. Note b. Whoever declares a doctrine of the confession to be an open question breaks a hole in the wall. Note c. The obligation does not extend to things that belong to the domain of human scholarship, for example, 1. that the author of a writing was Ambrose or Augustine. Melanchthon cites a writing of Leo's as being by Ambrose. 2. that the government may drive out of the land those who will not learn the catechism. 3. that the manner of demonstration could sometimes be different. One may also prove the articles of faith with other words, from other Scripture passages, and with other arguments. 4. that the form and wording of the words could not be improved here and there.

7. that the papists are called donkeys. None of this touches the doctrine of Scripture. Note d. It would indeed be a defect if Bible passages in the confessions had been wrongly interpreted or wrongly applied, but no such exegesis is evident in the Book of Concord. Note e. We have also subscribed along with the rest to the semper virgo [the perpetual virginity] (Kon. 90), the clauso utero [the closed womb] (Kon. 668), and traducianism (Kon. 579). Whoever does not wish to subscribe to these as well may state so beforehand; e. in the same sense that the words themselves carry. Whoever indeed signs the symbols, but here and there gives them a different meaning, is no faithful Lutheran. Note a. How very differently the papists and the Reformed interpret the Apostles' Creed. Note b. The confessions are subscribed to by many in an entirely different sense. Thus wished to subscribe 1. Arius, to the Nicene Creed,

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
