Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

47. Forgiveness of sins. The benefit that the Lord's Supper brings is therefore forgiveness of sins. What a great, precious treasure! Shed for forgiveness. Note a. Here is forgiveness for all your sin. When one sin is forgiven, then all are forgiven. Note b. Where there is forgiveness, there is also blessedness. Note c. Shed for many for forgiveness. Matt. 26:28 means: shed for all. Note d. “For you.” A glorious word. If a poor man is given a large sum without any accompanying words, he might doubt whether it belongs to him. The words “for you” tear him out of all doubt. Note e. This is the chief fruit of the sacrament. Antithesis. a. Catholics. Not forgiveness is the chief fruit, but other graces. b. Modern writers. The chief fruit is union with Christ and the impartation of sanctifying power. Against this: a. That is putting the cart before the horse — they speak of sanctification without justification, of fruit without a tree. b. Union with Christ exists only where there is forgiveness.

48. Unterſchied zwiſchen dem Nutzen des Abendmahls einerſeits, und der Taufe und dem Evangelium andererſeits. Wir empfangen im Abendmahl ganz dasſelbe, wie a. In der Taufe. Anm. a. Anm. a.

48. The difference between the benefit of the Lord's Supper on the one hand, and of baptism and the gospel on the other. In the Lord's Supper we receive exactly the same thing as a. In baptism. Note a. The difference between the two is: through baptism spiritual life is chiefly to be awakened, through the Lord's Supper it is to be strengthened. Objection. If we already have forgiveness in baptism, then we do not need the Lord's Supper. — Then, one could further conclude, we would no longer need the gospel either. Note b. How important it is that, besides baptism, we also have the Lord's Supper, since we sin anew again and again and can thus again and again reassure ourselves of grace. And do we always believe with our whole heart? Note c. A threefold cord does not easily break. Eccl. 4:12. — Man does not eat only once either. b. As in the gospel. Note a. The Lord's Supper is a special proclamation of the gospel; in the Lord's Supper the whole gospel is summed up. Note b. How many different ways God has of distributing his grace! Note c. The difference between the Lord's Supper and preaching is chiefly this: 1. Through the Lord's Supper people are not meant to become Christians in the first place. For that, the preaching of the Word is necessary, to wake people from their death in sin and bring them to faith in Christ. Through the Lord's Supper, Christians are to be strengthened and furthered in their faith. 2. Therefore preaching is more general and goes out to the crowd, while in the Lord's Supper God takes each person more individually. Private absolution. 3. In addition, Christ gives us in the Lord's Supper the ransom, his precious blood, by which forgiveness has been won for us. Note d. What comfort lies in the fact that here Christ's body and blood are eaten. ‘He who can uphold heaven now wishes to lodge within you.’ Hymn 210:1. Note e. It is precisely against the trial ‘Will God accept me?’ that the Lord's Supper is instituted.

49. Therefore the Lord's Supper is 1. A pledge. Just as the engagement ring confirms the engagement, so Christ's body and blood confirm the word of forgiveness. 2. A seal of forgiveness. Note a. Stories on this: Luth. 3, 106. Syn. Frei. 98, 68. Note b. Thus the communicant is, through the Lord's Supper, 1. Made more certain of forgiveness. Where this does not happen, one has received the Lord's Supper in vain. 2. Strengthened in faith in forgiveness. Note c. How necessary such a strengthening of faith is! Our faith should not always remain weak. Note d. What a glorious meal the Lord's Supper is! It should therefore be held in high esteem.

Means of sanctification. Through the Lord's Supper the new man in us is strengthened. Christ, the bread of life, is the right food of our soul. And indeed, through the Lord's Supper the following are increased: a. Love toward God. Such love of God must move us to love in return. b. Love toward the neighbor. “To fervent love among us all.” Nor should the fruit fail to appear: “You shall love your neighbor.” Hymn 205:10. Note a. 1 Cor. 10:17: One bread — one body. The closest possible fellowship exists among communicants. Note b. The same Jesus in all! Note c. Can one who has obtained forgiveness in the Lord's Supper still be angry with his brother? Note d. This is a touchstone of whether you have received the sacrament fruitfully. c. Hatred of sin. John 5:14: Sin no more. Is sin forgiven us so that we may go on sinning? Note. In the Lord's Supper we receive strength for the fight against the devil, the world, and the flesh; we are armed against all temptations. d. Zeal for good works and a godly walk. e. Patience under the cross. We are armed against all afflictions. f. Christian joy. g. Hope. The Lord's Supper is a symbol, an earnest, of the resurrection. God thereby assures us that he will not always leave us sitting in this misery. Where there is forgiveness, there is life. h. Union with Christ. This union becomes ever more intimate. I am yours, you are mine. Christ lives in me. Gal. 2:20. Note. Yet this union is not an essential one, but only a spiritual one.

51. Confession. Going to the Lord's Supper is also an act of confession. For this reason the Lord's Supper too should, where possible, always be celebrated publicly; and specifically the communicant confesses that he 1. Wants to be a Christian, that Christ died for him too. Note a. This is why Paul says: Proclaim the Lord's death. 1 Cor. 11. Note b. This happens in word (singing) and deed. 2. That the doctrine of the congregation in whose midst one communes is his own. Whoever goes to communion among the Methodists is rightly regarded as a Methodist. What the flag is to the soldier, the Lord's Supper is to the Christian. Note a. The sermon in churches of false belief can, under certain circumstances, be listened to without thereby confessing agreement with it. It is different with the Lord's Supper. Note b. Therefore those of false belief may not commune with us, nor we with those of false belief. Note c. Everyone who wishes to commune with us must therefore first make a confession. Registration for confession. Examination. Note d. Only where a right practice of the Lord's Supper prevails is the Lord's Supper a mark of faith. — Sacramental fellowship without unity of doctrine is an absurdity. Objection a. In this way the Lord's Supper becomes a meal of division. Objection b. We admit everyone, if only they are believers. — But that, again, we can only determine from their confession.

52. Faith and the Lord's Supper. a. Although the essence of the Lord's Supper does not depend on faith, faith nevertheless belongs to its beneficial use. Without spiritual eating and drinking, the sacramental eating profits nothing. Note a. This lies also in the words: In remembrance of me. No one can do that without faith.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
