To Avoid Overemphasis on Numbers
and Encourage Thorough Instruction
of New Members
RESOLUTION 2-10A
Overture 2-60 (CW, p. 151)
Wuereas, Increase in numbers is regarded as a mark of
success in temporal businesses; and -
Wuereas, Some have equated growth in numbers with
spiritual success in evangelism and church work; and
WHEREAS, Every congregation and every Christian has
the obligation both to keep the message straight and to get
the message out; and
WHEREAS, Scripture indicates that God wishes His
church to grow but points quite clearly to the fact that this
growth must come through the working of the Holy Spirit
in Word and Sacrament; therefore be it
Resolved, That the Synod, its Districts and congrega-
tions, be reminded that the gaining of converts must be ac-
complished by the Holy Spirit, who works through Word
and Sacrament rather than through a variety of human
techniques; and be it further
Resolved, That the Synod, its Districts and congrega-
tions, be reminded of the importance of thorough instruc-
tion in the Word before individuals are accepted into church
membership.
Action: Adopted as amended (11).
(The resolution was amended by inserting the words the
Synod, its Districts and before the word congregations in both re-
solves and deleting the words and individuals from the first re-

and the Lutheran Confessions; and ,

Spirit through the proper use of Word and Sacrament; and
WHEREAS, Such gatherings are to promote Christian ser-
vice and leadership for youth; therefore be it
Resolved, That the Synod in convention give thanks to
God for the many blessings these significant events have
been in the lives of young people; and be it further
