Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

54. The Old Testament bears witness to Christ. John 5:39: It is they [the Scriptures] which testify of me. Acts 10:43: To him all the prophets bear witness. Christ is the kernel and the star of the Scripture of the Old Testament. What the sun is in the world, Christ is in Scripture. And indeed the Old Testament speaks of a. Christ's name. Jer. 23:6. Jehovah, Lord: b. Christ's humanity. Gen. 3:15: seed of the woman. 22:18: Abraham's seed. Num. 24:17: a star out of Jacob. Deut. 18:15: a prophet from among you, of your brethren. 2 Sam. 7:12: thy seed, which shall come from thy body. Jer. 23:5: a branch of David's line. Isa. 11:1: a rod out of the stem of Jesse: c. Christ's sinlessness. Isa. 7:14: a virgin shall be with child. Therefore he was not conceived and born in sin. He also lived a holy life. Isa. 53:11: the righteous one. 53:9: neither had he done any wrong. d. Christ's deity. Gen. 3:15: shall crush the serpent's head. 22:18: all nations blessed. 49:10: unto him shall the gathering of the peoples be. 2 Sam. 7:14: he shall be my son. 7:19[?]: a man who is God. Ps. 2:7: thou art my son. Ps. 110:1: the LORD said unto my Lord. Ps. 45:7: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee. Isa. 7:14: Immanuel. 9:6: mighty God (strength, hero). 40:9-11: behold your God. Jer. 23:5-6: the LORD our righteousness. Note a. Prov. 8:22 also deals with the personal Wisdom, Jesus Christ: the LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way. Prov. 30:4: What is his name? and what is his son's name? Note b. The doctrine of Christ's deity is expressed in the Old Testament with the same definiteness as in the New. Note c. The angel of the LORD, of whom the Old Testament speaks so often, is Jesus Christ himself. Hos. 12:4-6. Gen. 31:11-13. Isa. 63:9. Compare with Ex. 13:21. 1 Cor. 10:4. e. Christ's works. Ps. 33:6: the heavens were made by the word of the LORD. Prov. 8:30: then I was by him, as a master workman: f. Christ's humiliation: his birth in Bethlehem. Micah 5:2. his lowly origin. Isa. 53:2: a root out of dry ground. No form nor comeliness; his flight into Egypt. Hos. 11:1. the slaughter of the children. Jer. 31:15. a Nazarene. Isa. 11:1 (shoot, sprout: netzer). Christ's suffering. Ps. 22:13[?]: sufferings without number. his entry into Jerusalem. Zech. 9:9. the scattering of the disciples. Zech. 13:7. the betrayal by Judas. Zech. 11:13. the dividing of the garments. Ps. 22:18. "My God, my God." Ps. 22:1; g. Christ's exaltation. Ps. 8:5: crowned with honor and adornment. V. 6: all things put under his feet. Dan. 7:13-14: God gave him dominion. the resurrection. Ps. 16:10: thou wilt not leave my soul in hell. See Resurrection. the ascension. Ps. 68:18: thou hast ascended on high. Ps. 47:5: God is gone up with a shout. the sitting at the right hand of God. Ps. 110: sit thou at my right hand; h. Christ's work of redemption. The hope of redemption and of a redeemer. Ps. 25:22: God, redeem Israel. Ps. 53:6[?]: Oh that the salvation [of Israel were come], etc. Mic. 4:10. Gen. 49:18: I have waited for thy salvation. Isa. 56:1: my salvation is near. Jer. 30:18: I will turn again the captivity. Ps. 126:4: turn again our captivity, O LORD. Christ, the Savior, his substitution. Isa. 53:4: he bore our sickness. his kingship. Ps. 110:1. The application of salvation through preaching, faith, conversion: Isa. 53:11: he shall justify many. Ps. 22:22: I will declare thy name. Isa. 40:9: O Zion, that bringest good tidings. Ps. 22:26: the meek shall eat. Isa. 55:1: without money. 53:1: but who has believed our report? 52:8[9]: Zion shall be comforted [restored]. The gathering of the church and its struggle until the day of the Lord: Gen. 49:10: unto him shall the gathering of the peoples be. Ps. 117:1: praise him, all ye nations. Ps. 118:20[?]: enter into his gates. Ps. 2:2: the rulers take counsel together against the Lord. The Antichrist. Dan. 7 and 11. Ps. 98:9: he comes to judge the earth. The consummation of salvation. The resurrection of the dead. Ps. 17:15: I shall awake with thy likeness. 49:15. Job 19:25-27. The kingdom of glory; Ps. 16:11: in thy presence is fulness of joy. Note a. Modern theologians cannot find Christ in the Old Testament, for example: 1. Tholuck. The virgin, Isa. 7:14, is not the mother of the Lord, but the prophet's own newly married wife. 2. Grotius. The LORD who is our righteousness, Jer. 23:6, is Zerubbabel. 3. Riehm. The prophecy of the old covenant knows nothing of a suffering and dying Messiah. 4. Delitzsch. Such exegesis has forfeited all right in the Lutheran church, for by it the Bible is destroyed. Then the Old Testament could not instruct unto salvation. How very differently Luther interpreted! Il. 89, 34. Note b. Brighter and clearer, to be sure, is the doctrine of Christ's person and work expressed in the New Testament. The dawn compared to the bright noonday. Note c. The prophecies are fulfilled in Christ. Christ is the promised Savior.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
