1. Das Weſen des Chriſtentums beſteht
a. nicht in Ethik, Tugendlehre, Moral, ſondern
Anm. a.
Anm. Dieſe Religion findet überall Anklang, weil ſie die natürliche Religion des Herzens iſt. Werklehre;

1. The essence of Christianity consists
a. not in ethics, the doctrine of virtue, morality, but
b. in faith in the Savior Jesus Christ, who died for us. Justification by grace for Christ's sake.
Note a. If one sets aside faith as the only way to salvation, all Christianity ceases and every doctrine of works is nothing more than heathen morality.
Note b. If Christianity were a doctrine of works, then even human reason would know something of Christianity, and the object of the Christian religion would be a part of the realm of natural knowledge.
Note c. The Christian religion cannot be drawn from reason. It is a secret, hidden wisdom.
Note d. Christ is the center, the core and the star of Christianity.
Note e. The church must hold fast to this doctrine, since it alone saves people, alone gives true comfort and quiets the conscience; it makes rich in good works and enables people to distinguish truth from error, right doctrine from false.
Note f. Christianity, like every religion, of course also shows itself in life and conduct. The tree grows from within outward.
Antithesis. 1. Among the sects and lodges, Christianity consists chiefly in the improvement of life, in doing the will of God.
Note. This religion finds approval everywhere, because it is the natural religion of the heart. Doctrine of works;

2. Harnack.
2. Das Chriſtentum iſt die wahre Religion. Das wird
beſtätigt
a. durch Vernunftbeweiſe,
b. durch das Zeugnis des h. Geiſtes.
Anm. a. Die wahre Religion kann nicht ſein.:
2. Die heidniſche Religion. Welche Greuel haben ihre Götter verübt!
3. Die mohammedaniſche Religion.
Der Koran iſt ein Lügenbuch.
4. Die jüdiſche Religion.
Anm. b. Alle dieſe Religionen ſind im Grunde genom⸗

Anm c. Bei der Frage, ob das Chriſtentum Wahrhei:

2. Harnack. Christ was a mere man of virtue. The essence of Christianity consists in man's own morality. What reception this found. L. W. 47, 353—359.
Note g. The difference between Christianity and the other religions is therefore above all this:
1. Christianity has a Savior, heathenism only teachers who give instruction for a virtuous life.
2. Christianity cannot be drawn from reason, as the other religions can.
2. Christianity is the true religion. This is confirmed
a. by proofs of reason,
b. by the testimony of the Holy Spirit.
Note a. The true religion cannot be:
1. natural religion. It knows that there is a God, but not how he is disposed. It knows nothing of immortality and does not satisfy. What the world holds to be religion, man can accomplish by himself.
2. the heathen religion. What abominations its gods have committed!
3. the Mohammedan religion. The Koran is a book of lies.
4. the Jewish religion.
Note b. All these religions are, at bottom, alike. Only the kind of works differs everywhere.
Note c. In the question whether Christianity is the truth, everything depends on whether Scripture is God's Word.
Note d. False standards for judging a religion are 1. its reasonableness, 2. whether it impresses, etc.
Note e. Only that is the true religion which 1. gives God alone the honor, 2. gives man constant comfort.
Note f. Christianity is not a true religion, but the true religion. All others are false. Currency and counterfeit. No coordination.

3. Das Chriſtentum hat ſich trotz aller Anfeindung
wunderbar ansgebreitet. Es übt ſeinen Einfluß aus
1. auf einzelne Perſonen. Bibelleſen. § 6. ſ. Kraft des Wortes Gottes.
2. auf ganze Völker.
Anm. a. Die Einwände der Feinde des Chriſtentums
ſind ſchon oft genug widerlegt worden. Hier ſind etliche:
Anm. b. Was ein Heide über das Chriſtentum urteilte.

3. Christianity has, despite all hostility, spread wonderfully. It exercises its influence
1. on individual persons. Bible reading. § 6. See Power of the Word of God.
2. on whole nations.
Note a. The objections of the enemies of Christianity have already been refuted often enough. Here are a few:
1. Because Christians are often shown to be hypocrites, the whole of Christianity is worth nothing.
2. Christianity is unreasonable. — No article of faith conflicts with reason that stays within its proper bounds. What goes beyond our reason is not therefore against our reason.
3. If faith makes Christianity, then it is an easy thing about the Christian religion. — But no one can give himself this faith.
