Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

gold, even if a harlot carries it in shame.’ Baier 3, 712. Note a. Even the very strongest faith would not make absolution powerful, if the power did not already lie in the Word. Note b. If absolution is not believed at the moment, it can still be believed later and serve for comfort. Note c. Faith does not create the reconciliation, but only grasps it. Note d. If the power of absolution depended on faith, the pastor would every time be taking God's name in vain, as often as he absolves a hypocrite.

2. nicht von ſeiner Reue. Freilich muß Reue da ſein, wenn die Abſolution ihren Zweck erreichen ſoll, aber unſere Reue macht die Abſolution nicht kräftig. Dann wüßte man nie, ob Reue genug vorhanden wäre.

2. Not on his repentance. To be sure, repentance must be present if absolution is to achieve its purpose, but our repentance does not make absolution powerful. Otherwise one could never know whether enough repentance were present.

4. Not on his feeling and inner sensations. If I have gravely offended someone, what folly it would be to wait until the feeling of forgiveness comes over me. Whoever relies on his own heart is a fool. Note a. One often feels nothing at all of forgiveness. Job 7:21: Why do you not pardon my transgression? Note b. We are therefore not enemies of inward experiences. Note c. One should not let oneself be kept from absolution by the awareness and feeling of one's own unworthiness. Antithesis. a. The papacy bases absolution entirely on human work: auricular confession, contrition, satisfaction, and thereby makes absolution entirely uncertain. b. Sects make the power of absolution dependent on the disposition of the heart. One must first come to a breakthrough. c. Synergists. For them all the promises of the gospel are conditioned on human work, behavior, etc. d. Some say: Where there is no faith, there is no absolution. C. On the Word alone. If the one I have offended tells me he has forgiven me, then I have forgiveness. One must hold to the word. I believe what Jesus' word promises. Antithesis. Enthusiasts, the Reformed, Methodists — fanatics — want to know nothing of an absolution through the outward Word; they appeal to the inner witness of the Spirit. A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
