A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri
Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at
St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses,
and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by
volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's
own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation
below is a link to that page.
Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set
them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them —
Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds
Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.
4,478 entries
under 828 headwords, carrying
129,203 citations and
2,331 fragments too damaged to read
· built 2026-09-16.
uncorrected OCR
The German below is machine transcription of
the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read
against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a
garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Abbreviation: Trak. = Traktat [tract]. The doctrine of the means of grace. Brunn.
Outline.
God does not deal with us immediately, but mediately, § 2. How does the Spirit come into us? § 1. The means are Word and Sacrament; they are means of grace. § 4. Scripture proof. § 5. The means of grace are unchangeable, sufficient, always powerful, §§ 6-8. We should diligently use them, § 9.
Means of Grace.
1. It is the Holy Spirit who wants to work in us. 1 Cor. 12:3: No one can call Jesus Lord but by the Holy Spirit. Rom. 8:26: The Spirit helps our weakness. But how, then, does he come to us? What good are all the heavenly goods, if one does not know how to get them! What good is the best soup, if one has no spoon and plate!
2. God deals with us
a. not immediately. How then should we notice and recognize that the Spirit has come into the heart? It could go no other way than that one relied on feeling and experience. Without means we could never become sure and glad of forgiveness;
b. mediately. God gives no one his Spirit except through outward means. Konk. 321, Art. 8, 3.
Note a. The preservation of the spiritual life, too, happens mediately.
Note b. The physician needs means in order to heal the sick. The farmer, too, does not tear open the field with his bare hands.
Note c. The determination of what means these should be, of which God is to make use, does not lie with us. Only God can ordain means of grace. Compare § 7b. The Pope.
3. The means by which God wills to deal with us are Word and Sacrament. There are only two means of grace.
Note a. Properly speaking, if one may put it so, there is only one means of grace: the Word, "verbum audibile et visibile." Konk. 202. 203. For even the Sacraments are powerful only for the Word's sake. "Water indeed does not do it." "Eating and drinking indeed do not do it!" The seal, detached from the letter or from the word, would have no meaning. Can. 82, 28. 29. Or. 1904, 42.
Note b. That God forgives us our sin must be sealed to us by the Word, just as the judge declares to the criminal that he is pardoned.
Note c. That the Immeasurable One deals with us at all -- what condescension, what grace that is!
d. God does not deal with us through dreams, visions, special communications of the Spirit, inquiries of the dead, revelations. Whoever still expects special revelations despises the Bible and tempts God. Phil. 3 cannot be brought in against this here.
Note e. What trouble the heathen take to discern the will of God from the flight of birds, the entrails of animals, through frenzied enthusiasts, and so on!
Note f. We too are still often given to fanaticism. Especially in temptation we would gladly ground ourselves on something external. "If only God would give a sign."
Note g. We need not go up to heaven or down into the depths. The Word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. Rom. 10:6-8.
Note h. The word "means" or "means of grace" does not stand in the Bible, but is clearly expressed through the preposition "dia," through, e.g., 1 Cor. 1:21: to save through foolish preaching. 2 Thess. 2:14: called through our gospel. 1 Cor. 15:2: by which also ye are saved. Eph. 3:6. 1 Pet. 1:23.
Note i. God deals with us only through the Word. Rom. 10:14, 17: How shall they believe of whom they have not heard? Konk. 600, § 50: through this means and not otherwise. 99, § 68. -- Whoever does not seek grace in the Word, but thinks to find the treasures elsewhere, deceives himself and will gape toward heaven in vain. W. 82, 67. Luke 16:29: they have Moses and the prophets.
Note k. In the realm of nature God works everywhere; but in a spiritual way only where the Gospel is.
Objection 1. Cornelius came to faith without the preaching of the gospel.
Objection 2. It is unworthy of God to bind himself to earthly things, word, water, wine. -- This calls to mind Peter: Lord, shouldst thou wash my feet?
Note l. The means that God uses seem foolish to our reason, e.g., John 15:3: clean, merely for the sake of the word, "just a couple handfuls of water." If he told us to pick up a straw in order to obtain grace, should we not do it? W. 76, 25.
Note m. In an extraordinary way God can take other paths. He has not bound himself to the means of grace. Unbaptized children of Christians.

4. Word and Sacraments are means of grace, that is, means by which God distributes, bestows, imparts, and seals his grace.
Wis. Syn. 80, 17. 21-23. Zorn, Selbst. 240.
Note a. All grace, all the treasures that Christ has earned, God has laid into the means of grace. There my treasure lies buried. They are the swaddling clothes in which Jesus lies, Luth. 18, 167, the garments in which he wraps himself. Jo. 1904, 58.
Note b. The means of grace have an imparting (collative) and a working (effective) power. Can. 82, 31. 32. L. W. 36, 114. Out. 182.
1. "Vis collativa": The Gospel is not an empty sound, a mere narrative, a wishing of grace upon someone, but the presentation, the impartation, of grace itself. It brings the goods themselves, as a bearer of peace brings peace, a message of pardon brings the pardon, a "deed" brings the property. W. 76, 42. N. W. 79, 11. Cal. 1903, 14. 15.
2. "Vis effectiva": It works in the heart of man faith, conversion, rebirth. Süd. 92, 20. Mit. 98, 16. Cal. 1904, 35.
Note c. Both happen in the same moment. In that the rich man offers and bestows the gifts, he also awakens trust in the person.
Note d. Christ does not merely offer the goods, but puts them, as it were, into a person's pocket, so that they become his.
Note e. Subjective justification, too, is not to be sought outside the Word; otherwise no one could be certain of it.
Note f. In the means of grace Christ comes to us. John 14:3: We will come unto him. 1 John 5:6: came by water and blood.
Note g. Therefore the administration of the means of grace is the chief part of Christian worship.
Note h. This doctrine gives God all the glory, gives sinners abiding comfort, and makes us certain of grace.
Note i. Since the time of the apostles no teacher of the church has understood this doctrine so rightly, and preached it so clearly and plainly, as Luther. Only in the Lutheran Church is this doctrine of the means of grace taught.

5. Scripture proof.
a. The Word is a means of grace.
1 Pet. 1:23: born again by the living word. James 1:18: begotten by the word of truth. John 17:20: shall believe on me through their word. Rom. 10:17: So then faith cometh by hearing. John 15:3: clean, merely for the sake of the word. Il. 79, 56. 57. Sieck, Way 51. Called through the gospel. Brun. 191.
Wis. Syn. 85, 23. 24.
Vis collativa. Isa. 52:7: messengers that publish peace. Eph. 2:17: preached peace in the gospel. Acts 20:24: the gospel of the grace of God. 20:32: the word of his grace. Luke 24:47: that repentance and remission of sins should be preached. 2 Cor. 5:18: the ministry that preaches reconciliation. Acts 13:26: the words of this salvation. 5:20: the words of this life. John 6:68: the words of eternal life. Rom. 15:29: the full blessing of the gospel. Acts 10:44: the Spirit fell on all them which heard the word. Gal. [illegible].

The Word saves. Luke 11:27: Blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it. Acts 11:14: words whereby thou shalt be saved. 2 Tim. 3:15: able to make thee wise unto salvation. James 1:21: which is able to save your souls. Rom. 1:16: the power of God unto salvation. 1 Tim. 4:16: save thyself and them that hear thee. John 8:51. 5:24.
The Word is powerful. Rom. 1:16: the power of God. 1 Cor. 1:18: the power of God unto us. Heb. 4:12: living and powerful. John 6:63: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life. Luke 8:11: the seed is the word. What power lies in the seed! God has laid his whole power into the word. In this, God's word differs from all human speech: what God thinks and speaks, that is and comes to pass. Brun. 192. Trak. 14. 15.
Note a. If God said in his word, you shall yet live twenty years, then you would live by the power of this word, even if all the seas wished to drown you.
Note b. The power of the word of God comes from this, that God himself is present in the word. Ps. 81[?]. Exod. 4:12. Through the word the Spirit works in me and upon me. Brun. 493. Trak. 14.
Note c. By the word of God here the Law is not to be understood. The Law is no means of grace (although some teachers have called it that, because one does not come to true faith without the Law).
Note d. To the word of the gospel belongs also absolution, which is gospel for the individual.
b. The Sacraments are means of grace.
1. Baptism. 1 Pet. 3:20-21: the water doth also now save us in baptism. Titus 3:5: he saved us, by the washing of regeneration. Eph. 5:26: cleansed by the washing of water by the word. John 3:5: born again of water and of the Spirit.
Cal. 95, 32. 1903. Neb. 85, 13. Wis. Syn. 80, 25. 26. 81, [illegible]. 92, 35. 1900, 30. 16. 17.
2. The Lord's Supper. Shed for the remission of sins. See Lord's Supper, pages 14. 15.
Note a. There are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood. 1 John 5:8.
Note b. We thank God that he deals with us in various ways. A sinner needs much comfort. Whoever holds one means of grace or another to be superfluous is ungrateful toward God.
Note c. The Sacraments have no special working different from that of the Word. Konk. 202, § 5: work the same thing in the heart.
Antithesis. The Word, they say, is mere promise, the Sacraments a bestowal. Brun. 508. The benefit of the Lord's Supper is said to be the seed of the resurrection. Can. 82, 29. 30. Cal. 1907, 54. 57. Martensen. Süd. 92, 19. Vilmar, Kahnis. Can. 82, 29. Schott: Theses on the peculiar meaning and effect of the Sacraments as distinguished from the Word. L. W. 26, 282. 283. -- Therefore among them, too, the Word is no longer the chief part in the Sacrament. Trak. 34. 35.
Note d. As a means to lead men to the means of grace, God uses temptation and trial.

6. Antithesis. That Word and Sacraments are means of grace is denied by
a. Enthusiasts and sects in general.
1. The Spirit must do it, apart from the Word and alongside the Word.
2. They speak of special revelations or of the inner word.
3. Through praying, wrestling, struggling at the mourner's bench, grace is supposed to come.
4. The heavenly goods come immediately from God, not in Word and Sacrament. Word and Sacrament are mere signs. W. 59, 30. Luth. 45, 93.
5. They separate the testimony of the Spirit from Baptism.
6. When they still call Word and Sacrament means of grace, they mean by this a stimulus to find grace for oneself. To them it is a means of grace by which one wholly works out grace for oneself, which helps toward a life pleasing to God.
Note a. The enthusiasts
1. stop up the channels, tear down the bridge, lock up the treasure. Walth. Ges. u. Ev. 2, 152. 153.
2. regard the Sacraments as works that they offer to God,
3. mix Law and Gospel. From the works that belong to the Law -- praying, wrestling, struggling -- one is supposed to recognize whether one stands in grace with God;
4. make all grace uncertain. Who can rely on his feeling?
5. deny the doctrine of justification by grace alone, confuse justification and sanctification, forgiveness with God with the experience of grace. They do not conceive of justification as outside us, but as inwardly within us;
6. deny the complete redemption, the objective justification of all men.
Note b. Everything that is boasted of the Spirit apart from Word and Sacrament is of the devil. Konk. 322. God gives no one his Spirit and grace except through the Word. Konk. 321, Art. 8, § 3. The Spirit does not work without the Word, and the Word is not without the Spirit. Jo. 1904, 56.
b. The Reformed have no means of grace.
1. The means of grace are empty signs and give no grace. The Spirit works without the Word. Jo. 1904, 70-72. Baptism, Jo. 1904, 73. The Lord's Supper, see Lord's Supper, pp. 23. 24.
2. Christ is not present in the Word, but is shut up in heaven.
3. The Word is merely an instruction, a narrative, like human words.
Note a. Therefore the preacher in the church service does not occupy the position he holds in the Lutheran service. He is not a representative of God who acts in God's name.
Note b. How great is the difference between the Lutheran and the Reformed Church! We have an entirely different foundation.
c. Zwingli. The Spirit needs no guide. He needs no chariot. Sacraments do not bring grace. W. 59, 31. 57. W. 76, 28. 29. Luth. 43, 142. God does not wish to give the Spirit through signs. Wis. Syn. 81, 28.
d. Calvin. The Spirit has often worked in man apart from the Word. The inner word. Cal. 1900, 34. For the smaller part of mankind the means of grace are mere signs; for the non-elect a deceptive appearance, since God has already destined them to damnation anyway. Can. 82, 8.
e. Methodists reckon man's own doing among the means of grace. The gospel is merely instruction about Christ. Luth. 40, 75. Baptism a sign. Luth. 4, 169. 166.
f. Presbyterians. Konk. Syn. 83, 20. 21.
g. The Inspired. God also works immediately.
h. The Schwenckfeldians. God gives his Spirit without means. -- The Word is no means of grace. Konk. Syn. 83, 20.
i. The Neo-Lutherans. Not the written word, but the spoken sermon, is the means. Certainly the preached word is a means of grace. 1 Tim. 4:16: save thyself and them that hear thee. Luke 10:16: He that heareth you heareth me. But the same holds also of the written word. 2 Tim. 3:15: able to make thee wise unto salvation. John 20:31: these are written, that ye might believe. 1 John [illegible].
Note. With this doctrine of the Neo-Lutherans the Bible would in effect be abolished, and the preacher or the church would again become a mediating person as in the papacy. -- Whoever cannot hear the spoken sermon would have no benefit from the Bible. -- On the deathbed this theory does not hold up.
k. Catholics. The gospel is not a means of grace in the true sense, but a new lawgiver who demands works. Moreover, to them Scripture is obscure, must be supplemented by tradition, and may not be read by the laity without permission. In Baptism only original sin and the sins committed before Baptism are forgiven. The Lord's Supper is a sacrifice. See Dak. 1907, 58. They do indeed speak of seven graces of the sacrament, but the grace is immediately limited again. Jo. 1904, 62. 63. Indulgences, etc. Luth. 43, 149.
Note. The doctrine of the means of grace has been the subject of hard battles and is even today a field in which much confusion prevails.

7. The means of grace are
a. unchangeable. No one should alter them. -- The Pope and the Temperance people have altered the Lord's Supper.
Note a. Insofar as God's Word is falsified, it is no longer a means of grace. God works only through pure, not through false, doctrine. -- Were the Spirit to work immediately, one would not need to pay such attention to purity of doctrine.
Note b. The means of grace are also altered where the wording is indeed retained but the sense is changed. The Antitrinitarians and Baptism. The Reformed and the Lord's Supper, see Lord's Supper 27, § 19. Socinians, Free Protestants, do indeed use the words but deny the Trinity, Christ's atoning death, etc. Wis. Syn. 81, 32.
b. sufficient for salvation.
Antithesis.
1. The Papists have instituted new means of grace. Seven sacraments. Konk. 202-204. Brun. 511. Wis. Syn. 81, 30. The Apocrypha, tradition, the Latin translation, the Vulgate.
2. The Methodists, etc. Prayer, they say, is a means of grace. We are indeed to call upon God, but prayer is not a means of grace, only an exercise of the faith of one already in grace. Konk. 204, § 16. -- Objection: He will give the Spirit to them that ask him. Luke 11:13. -- This was said not to non-Christians, but to Christians. Wis. Syn. 81, 31.
3. In American churches many means are employed to win people for Christ, but they are not means of grace:
c. always powerful. The power of the means of grace does not depend
1. on the one who administers the means of grace -- otherwise God would be dependent on men. It does not depend on his ordination, O. 67, 27. W. 68, 58, on his person and gifts, Wis. [Syn.] 27, on his faith, Konk. 40, Art. 8. Can. 97, 47. Even an unbeliever, a hypocrite, can lead men to salvation. O. 89, 42. W. 76, 39. Even if the devil himself were to administer the means of grace, they would be valid. W. 76, 36. 38. Matt. 23:2-3: They sit in Moses' seat, etc.
Note. This is not meant to say that it is a matter of indifference to a congregation whether it calls a believing or an unbelieving pastor. Through a godless walk of life a pastor can ruin much.
Antithesis.
1. Papists. The sacraments depend on the intention of the priest. Then one could never be certain whether one had received Baptism or the Lord's Supper.
2. Donatists. If a preacher is caught in a mortal sin, his office has no power.
3. Schwenckfeldians, Quakers. An unregenerate preacher cannot teach profitably.
4. The moderns. The preacher must be duly called and ordained. Grabau: succession of preachers. O. 67, 27. W. 76, 32. If someone is not ordained, then the word is an empty sound without Spirit and grace. W. 76, 28.
2. [Nor does the power of the means of grace depend] on the one who uses the means of grace. They are always powerful even when the person does not believe. Rom. 3:3: shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? Our faith does not first bring grace into the means of grace. My eye does not help make the sun shine. The power of the means of grace does not depend on our faith, though the benefit of them does. Whoever does not believe has no benefit from them. Brun. 507. Trak. 29.
Antithesis.
a. Novatians. If someone falls again into mortal sin after Baptism, one can no longer pronounce absolution to him, for it is uncertain whether it would help.
b. Methodists, Reformed. Only the believer partakes of the body and blood of Christ in the Lord's Supper.
d. [The means of grace] promote faith. The merely outward use helps nothing. Mark 1:15: believe the gospel. Acts 8:37: Believest thou, etc. Sixth Chief Part: he who has faith in these words. What good does it do if God offers us the goods and we do not take them? Can. 82, 31.
Note. The efficacy of the means of grace is not irresistible (see Grace, § 3d). Man has the sad power to thrust grace from himself through his resistance. (See Resistance.)
Antithesis.
a. Catholics. The means of grace work "ex opere operato." Whoever uses the means of grace always has the benefit. Syn. 85, 47. 38.
b. Neo-Lutherans. Through the mere reception of the sacraments even unbelievers become members of the body of Christ. An indelible character is impressed on them. -- By this, justification by faith is overturned. Without faith there is no membership in the body of Christ. Brun. 510.

9. Because the means of grace impart grace, one should use them diligently (gladly hear God's Word, comfort oneself with one's baptism, go diligently to the Lord's Supper). John 5:39: Search the Scriptures. The Bible does not help as a pillow. Cal. 1903, 22. If a sick person is to be helped, he must take the medicine. Cal. 1903, 20.
Note a. We may not sit in the corner and expect God to do something special with us.
Note b. We need the means of grace also for strengthening and preserving us in faith.
Note c. God has given the administration of the means of grace to the Church (see Office of the Keys, 129). Therefore it should
1. bring God's Word, the only means of missions, near to men. The sun of salvation rises in a region only with the preaching of the gospel;
2. see to the abundant administration of the means of grace. Col. 3:16: dwell in you richly.
Note d. Where the means of grace are not used, there is no gracious working of the Spirit.
