7. Synods and individuals, and their stance toward the symbols:
a. The Iowa Synod. It confesses to the symbolic books in its constitution, yet one may, for instance in the doctrine of Sunday or of the Antichrist, deviate from them without prejudice to the authority of the symbolic books. L. W. 25, 280.
Theses adopted by Iowa and Ohio at Toledo, 1907: L. W. 53, 278. 282.
b. The General Council has the confessions on paper, but not only tolerates false practice — it takes it under its protection.

führt. Verbindlich ſei in den Symbolen nur
a. die thetiſchen und antithetiſchen
Sätze, die da anfangen: Wir glauben, lehren und
bekennen,
b. was im Bekenntnis Bekenntnis iſt. Weder
die Motivierung, noch die Exegeſe, noch die Lehren, die

was in den Bekenntniſſen von Lehre enthalten iſt; c. die Heilslehren. Was Heilslehren ſind und was
nicht, wollen ſie ſelbſt entſcheiden. — Gehören nicht alle
Schriftlehren mehr oder weniger zum Heil?
d. die Grundwahrheiten des Evangelii,
e. das Weſentliche. — Alles, was zur Lehre gehört,

f. die Lehren, die ex profeſſo gehandelt werden. Anm. Man könnte nach all dieſen Reden auf den
Gedanken kommen, warum die Väter in den Bekennt⸗

8. Various arguments that have been made, or are still being made. It is claimed that only the following is binding in the symbols:
a. the thetic and antithetic sentences that begin: We believe, teach, and confess,
b. what in the confession is properly confession. Neither the motivation, nor the exegesis, nor the doctrines that are touched on incidentally are binding.
Note. That would be exactly as if one wanted to accept only the true part of what is true. — Everything that is contained as doctrine in the confessions is confessional;
c. the doctrines of salvation. What are and are not doctrines of salvation, they want to decide for themselves. — Do not all scriptural doctrines belong more or less to salvation?
d. the fundamental truths of the Gospel,
e. the essential matters. — Everything that belongs to doctrine is essential,
f. the doctrines that are treated ex professo.
Note. Given all these arguments, one might well wonder why the fathers said so much in the confessions that, on this view, does not belong there,
g. what the symbols intended to establish symbolically,
