beiden unvergleichlichen Predigten Dr. Luther's

Tode faſt unzählige Male aufgelegt, ſelbſt in

Januar 1847.

Heinrich Ludwig,
No. 70 u. 72 Veſey⸗Straße.

Subſcribenten belieben ſich an einen der un⸗
tenſtehenden Agenten zu wenden.

Agenten werden erſucht, die Liſte oder die
genaue Zahl der Subſcribenten bis zum 1.
April d.

Now the gracious God has accompanied the work of our hands with visible blessing, and throughout the whole of the United States, from the East to the farthest West, has made the hearts of many willing to support our undertaking.

Encouraged and emboldened by this, we take the present opportunity to inform our German brethren in the faith that we are ready to begin printing the Kirchenpostille without delay, as soon as 1000 genuine subscribers are on hand. The work is to appear in one large octavo volume of about 1300 to 1400 pages, in the same format and with the same type and altogether the same appearance as the Hauspostille, at $5.00 bound or $4.75 in paper covers. Should a sufficient number of subscribers be found within four months, we intend, with God's help, to have the work finished by the first of November of this year, so that the eager friends of the Kirchenpostille may have their regular edification from it in the coming church year.

In printing it we shall adhere exactly to the Walch edition of the Kirchenpostille of 1737, which is the most complete of all editions; we also intend, should space allow it in any way, to add two exceedingly valuable supplements, namely Dr. Luther's two incomparable sermons on the epistle for the first Sunday after Trinity, 1 John 4:16-21, on love, and on the epistle for the twenty-first Sunday after Trinity, Ephesians 6:10-17, on the armor of Christians — both of which are not found in the ordinary postils, and which are to be reprinted unaltered from the Altenburg edition of Luther's writings. Thus our edition would not only equal the most complete one, but would itself be even more comprehensive than the most complete edition.

The conscientiousness and disinterestedness with which we have carried out the publication of the Hauspostille, as it now lies before everyone's eyes, will, we hope, also secure for us the full confidence of the esteemed subscribers for this undertaking.

We most kindly request preachers and other friends of the undertaking to gather subscribers. Collectors will receive one free copy for every 6 copies for which they forward payment. The shipping of the copies will be at the collectors' expense; they may collect the amount of the transportation from the subscribers, which will come to very little for each individual.

It will not be held against us if, as before, we set the condition for subscribers and collectors that, when the work is nearing completion, the payment for it be sent to us in cash.

It will hardly be necessary to add another word in recommendation of the Kirchenpostille. It contains not only Dr. Luther's inspired sermons on all the Gospels for Sundays, festivals, and apostles' days — at least one sermon on each Gospel, often two, sometimes three — but also the exposition of all the Epistles of the church year, an advantage which makes the Kirchenpostille indispensable even to those who already possess the Hauspostille. We could list a series of commendations from the most tried and orthodox theologians of our Church, by which they have given testimony to the Kirchenpostille; for brevity's sake we recall only that Luther himself, in the writing published under the title "That the Words of Christ, 'This is My Body,' Still Stand Firm, Against the Fanatics," calls it his "very best book that he ever wrote." The Kirchenpostille has therefore always stood in high regard in the Lutheran Church as well; it has been printed almost innumerable times both before and after Luther's death, and has even been translated into Low German and Latin; and in the Electorate of Saxony the pastors were formerly instructed by their highest church authority "that they should take care to possess Dr. Luther's writings, but especially his Church and House Postils." We should think these were exhortations enough for the Lutherans of our time, preachers and lay Christians alike, to seize with eager hands this opportunity offered them of obtaining such a treasure.

We further ask all knowledgeable persons, especially the reverend preachers, to share with us their views on whether the time has not come to arrange for a new edition of Dr. Luther's larger commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians, and likewise an edition of the Book of Concord, toward which we would gladly lend a hand.

May the Lord our God be gracious to us and further the work of our hands among us; yes, may He further the work of our hands!

New York, January 1, 1847.

New Religious Periodical.

We have received the prospectus for the publication of a German religious newspaper under the title "Der Lutherische Botschafter" [The Lutheran Messenger]. According to a resolution of the Canton Conference of the Eastern District of the Ev. Luth. Synod of Ohio, this paper is to be edited by the Reverend Pastor Dr. Bierdemann and published by Pastor Fast. It is to appear once a month, for an annual subscription price of 50 cents, payable in advance. The city of Canton is the place of publication. Regarding the confession which the paper promises to uphold, the prospectus expresses itself as follows:

"As the organ of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio, the Messenger will naturally defend the venerable doctrines and practices of the Reformation of the sixteenth century (insofar as the latter have come down to us), and will work against the intrusion of new doctrines and measures into the Church. But while it thus stands forth as a Lutheran Messenger and defends the pure doctrines and practices of its Church — because (and only insofar as) they agree with God's Word — no true Christian who thinks otherwise will have cause to complain that the Messenger has uncharitably branded him a heretic; rather, its motto shall always be and remain: Speak the truth in love."

We wish the editor and publisher, with sincere heart, the best and most blessed progress in the undertaking hereby announced, for the building up of our precious Evangelical Lutheran Zion in this our new fatherland.

Announcement.

Those concerned are hereby once again reminded that the organization of the German Ev.-Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and other states will take place on the Monday after Dominica Jubilate, April 26, 1847, in Chicago, Illinois, and that its first session will be held there. In accordance with the agreement, the brethren are to arrive the Saturday before and report to Pastor A. Selle in Chicago, Illinois Street, north side of the river, or at Denker & Borge's clothing store, Lake Street.

Paid.

2nd half of the 3rd year. Rev. Pastor E. A. Schürmann (2 copies).
1st half of the 4th year. Messrs. J. F. Meyer and Pastor Schürmann (2 copies).
