Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Note a. Their progress is no progress. They are only warming up the same old cabbage again, and bringing back the old rubbish of errors found in Arius, Pelagius, Nestorius, and the like; Note b. Where have they already ended up! Scarcely one doctrine has remained unscathed. What is the truth about the progress of modern theologians in doctrine? L. W. 21, 161f. How they have "developed" doctrine further, for example: 1. the doctrine of the person of Christ. Kenosis. "Christ ceased to be God in order to become man," 2. the doctrine of the free will, 3. the doctrine of predestination. Note c. He who lets go of the Word will not advance further in the knowledge of the truth, but will lose the truth. Note d. They wish to bring mankind nothing new or precious, but rather to put aside what has for millennia given comfort, life, and blessing. Note e. "Modern theologians of the old faith" is a contradictio in adjecto. Note f. They still use the old expressions, but understand something entirely different by them. Note g. Heresy can grow; k. because the view of a development of doctrine 1. stands in contradiction to the whole history of the Church and of dogma. Note a. Church history shows no steady progress toward the better; rather now special times of deep decay, now times of special visitation. Note b. By assuming a successive origin of the dogmas, one seeks to support the theory of open questions; 2. gives up Scripture as the source of knowledge. One wants to know something out of oneself. Note. Thereby Scripture is also rejected as the norm. If articles of faith are contained in Scripture only in germ, then Scripture can no longer be the norm for the doctrines that have developed to full maturity. The norm for the acorn cannot be the norm for the oak tree; 3. makes the way of salvation an arbitrary one. If in the Old Testament there was as yet no doctrine of the Holy Spirit, of rebirth, of the Trinity, then people in those days were saved by another way. — It is a dangerous error to hold that the Old Testament contains different dogmas than the New: 4. overturns all certainty of faith. How sad it would be if doctrine

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
