Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Election in the wider and narrower sense, § 7. Election the cause of salvation, § 8. Election the cause of faith, § 9. Properties of election: particular, not absolute, eternal, unchangeable, § 10. Causes of election, no cause in us, § 11 and § 12. Intuitu fidei, § 13 to § 20. Objections against our doctrine, § 21. The doctrine of the Calvinists, § 22. Mystery, § 23 to § 27. Those who are lost, § 28 and § 29. Use of this doctrine for comfort and admonition, § 30. Am I elect? § 31. Citations, § 32. The status controversiae of election by grace, § 34. 1. The doctrine of election by grace is a. not a fundamental doctrine, knowledge of which is absolutely necessary for salvation. One can be saved without knowing this doctrine; b. a difficult doctrine. It does not belong to the milk of the gospel, but is strong meat. Note a. It is a mysterious article. Here it is said: take off your shoes. Note b. It is no doctrine for non-Christians. To them one must first answer the question: What must I do to be saved? c. A doctrine of the utmost importance. It 1. strikes down all self-boasting, 2. gives God all the glory, 3. strengthens the certainty of salvation, 4. incites us to the love of God. Note a. The eightfold benefit of this doctrine, see W. 77, 39. Note b. From this doctrine God's 1. omnipotence shines forth. The greatest powers fight against our salvation. God strikes them all down. 2. wisdom. The lot of the one always depends on another. Yet all must work together for our good. 3. love. God does everything so that we shall indeed be saved. Note c. The doctrine of election by grace in brief summary: What God does to us in time, he has already, out of grace, resolved from eternity to do. -- If God has converted me, then God willed to do it, and therefore also resolved to do it; all without any merit of mine.

, Anm. a.

2. Because this doctrine is important, it should also be preached to Christians; for a. we are to proclaim the whole counsel of God. Acts 20:27. It would be robbery against Christians to want to keep entirely silent about this doctrine; b. all the words of Scripture are useful for doctrine, comfort, etc.; c. Christ and the apostles spoke much of it; d. this doctrine is much distorted by false teachers. We must set the pure doctrine over against them. Note a. Two extremes are to be avoided: keeping entirely silent about this doctrine, and making it a hobbyhorse. Note b. Many think that one should at most dispute about this among the learned. Beza. Objection. Some might form dangerous thoughts from this doctrine. -- For the sake of misuse one may not omit the doctrine. Rather one must guard against misunderstanding. Konk. 704, § 2. Note c. In school one should above all else drive home the chief parts of Christian doctrine. Children do not need to know everything about election by grace that the teacher knows. Note d. Pastors and teachers especially should seek to gain clarity for themselves on this doctrine. For this, prayer and diligent study of Scripture and the Confessions are needed.

3. The Formula of Concord and election by grace. a. The authors included an article on this doctrine in the Formula of Concord precisely in order to forestall discord and division among their descendants. Konk. 704, § 1. 572, § 16. b. Division: §§ 1 and 2, introduction. §§ 3-8, the difference between providence and election. §§ 9-12, election is not to be searched out in the secret counsel of God. §§ 13-24, a complete definition of the concept of election. §§ 25-33. The right use. §§ 32-2. Those who are lost. §§ 43-51. Comfort. §§ 52-96. Warning against searching into the mystery. Note a. The Formula of Concord uses the word "providence" in a twofold sense: as foreknowledge, 705, § 6, and as electing, predetermining, 707, § 13. Likewise Osiander, L. W. 26, 131. Note b. Whether a doctrine is Lutheran or not must be judged by the Lutheran confessional writings, not from the private writings of the fathers. Whether a doctrine is in accord with Scripture is decided by Scripture alone.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
