Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Outline. The Jews a sign of the times. § 1. The Jews in the Old and New Testament. § 2. Mission to the Jews. § 3. What truths we must testify to them. Conversion of the Jews. § 5 to § 8. The Jews. The Jewish people is a remarkable people because of its origin, its separateness from other peoples, and is a riddle in world history. The Jews are a sign of the last time. Luke 21:32: this generation shall not pass away, etc. The unbelieving Jews are to remain until the Last Day. Note a. The Jews do not assimilate. The ten tribes of Israel have disappeared (the Afghans claim to be them, Schulb. 33, 221) — where are the Assyrians and other ancient peoples? Only the Jews are still here. Note b. The Jewish people is homeless, scattered throughout the world. — What persecutions have already come upon it! Proc. 1901, 38—41. Note c. Who always thinks of this sign? It is a proof of the truth of Scripture. Luke 21:33. My words shall not pass away. History: majesty, Jews. The Jews in the Old Testament. They were God's chosen people. To them God gave circumcision and the law. Wonderful leadings of the people! Note a. The reason why God chose precisely this people above others is not disclosed, but certainly it was no merit of the Jews; it was always a stiff-necked people. Deut. 9:4-6. Isa. 43:21. Deut. 7:7. Note b. Yet the election of the Jews was not an election to salvation. Jews who did not believe were nevertheless rejected. Note c. The purpose of this election was, 1. that there might be a place where everyone would know to find God's revelation. The Jews' state a firm seat of pure doctrine, a library for God's word. Ps. 76:2. 2. that all the world might know from where the Redeemer would come. Note d. The sins of the Jews were apostasy from God — fornication, usury and fraud and other vices. Jerusalem was a cesspool of vice, ripe for judgment. b. In the New Testament. The Jews rejected their Redeemer. Therefore the Lord has cast off his people. The children of the kingdom are cast out. Matt. 8:12. Type: the cursing of the fig tree. Matt. 21:19. Luke 13:6. Destruction of Jerusalem. Eb. 40—42. See Judgment 5164. Note. The Jews in Christ's time were mostly Sadducees or Pharisees. Their teachings went even beyond...

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
