42. The Lord's Supper should be administered publicly and in common, because
a. Christ and the apostles did it so.
b. Because the Lord's Supper is a public confession; to proclaim the Lord's death, 1 Cor. 11, and a proclamation is not usually made in a corner.
c. Because it is a bond of fellowship. Communion. 1 Cor. 10:17: One body.
Note a. The place of the celebration is therefore the church, the assembled worship service of Christians.
Note b. It is precisely in the celebration of the Lord's Supper that the main service reaches its high point.
Note c. If one wished to administer the Lord's Supper also privately in homes,
1. Divisions would easily arise.
2. Soon everyone would want to have it that way.
Note d. Cases of necessity in which exceptions are permitted are
1. Illness or imprisonment, or
2. When someone is about to set out on a long, dangerous journey and the Lord's Supper will not be celebrated again beforehand.

Krankencommunion
44. Krankencommunion.
Anm. a.

44. Communion of the sick. The pastor must free the sick person of all false notions regarding the Lord's Supper:
a. That the sick person does not regard it as physical medicine.
b. That he does not think: Now he must die, or, now he is sure to go to heaven — ex opere operato.
Note. To be sure, in communion of the sick the celebration may under certain circumstances be somewhat shortened, so that, for example, the exhortation is omitted, but never the prayer or the words of institution.
The Benefit.
45. False notions. Many hold the opinion that the Lord's Supper, the sacraments, have an effect different from, and going beyond, the effect of the Word. Münchmeyer, Delitzsch, Vilmar, Thomasius.
Note a. The difference between the effect of the Word and that of the Lord's Supper is said to be this: The Word works psychologically through understanding and will upon the heart, the Lord's Supper in a drastic way; the Word is for the soul, the Lord's Supper for the body.
Note b. As to what the particular effects of the Lord's Supper are, opinions differ.
Notions about the benefit of the Lord's Supper:
a. That it brings about a bodily union with Christ, whereby our flesh and blood are ennobled.
