1.N Cor. 10, 17, 21. Ein Brod, ein Leib.
Anm. a. 1.

1. Going to the Lord's Supper is a confession of faith and doctrine. See Lord's Supper.
Going to the Lord's Supper is therefore church fellowship. All who partake of the Lord's Supper together thereby enter into the closest fellowship. 1 Cor. 10:17, 21. One bread, one body.
Note a. 1 Cor. 10:18: Are not those who eat the sacrifices partakers of the altar, that is, of the religion in whose name the sacrifice is offered?
Note b. If those of false belief commune with us, they actually enter into our fellowship.

2. Abendmahlsgemeinſchaft zwiſchen Recht- und Falſchgläubigen ſtreitet
a. Gegen Gottes Wort. Gott hat alle Gemeinſchaft mit Falſchgläubigen verboten. Röm. 16, 17. 2. Joh. 10, 11.
Anm.
Anm. a.

2. Communion fellowship between the orthodox and those of false belief conflicts
a. With God's Word. God has forbidden all fellowship with those of false belief. Rom. 16:17. 2 John 10, 11.
Note. In the Old Testament too, no stranger was allowed to take part in the Passover.
b. With the unity that God wills. Eph. 4:3—6. 1 Cor. 1:10.
c. With love toward the one to whom it is given. He must
1. Deny his own faith (the truth).
2. Outwardly profess a doctrine he does not approve of. Hypocrisy.
d. With love toward the congregation.
1. It would be led astray regarding the truth, made indifferent toward doctrine. What offense would thereby be caused; how many obstinate persons would be strengthened!
2. It would have to enter into fellowship with those with whom it wants no fellowship.
e. With the prohibition against making oneself a partaker of another's sin.
Note a. The pastor too denies the faith, plays the hypocrite, and makes himself a partaker of another's sin. Many a deceived soul will one day accuse him.
Note b. Communion fellowship with those of false belief flows from indifferentism toward pure doctrine and results in indifferentism and unionism. Error demands equal rights in the church.

Anm. a.

Andern Aergernis geben.
Anm. a.
4. Einwände. a.

A. Those of false belief cannot be admitted to the Lord's Supper among us. Lutheran altars only for Lutherans.
Note a. A pastor should make no exception to this. If he admits some, he can also admit others, even Catholics.
Note b. A pastor sins doubly gravely if he admits those who do not believe in the presence of Christ in the Lord's Supper. The Reformed. See Lord's Supper § 15. What an abomination it is if he lets part of his communicants regard the Lord's Supper as mere bread and wine.
Note c. By this we do not declare those of false belief to be non-Christians.
Note d. Members of the congregation should not hold it against their pastor when he turns away those of false belief, but should stand faithfully by him, rather than leaving the congregation if their pastor acts otherwise. A fine example: Luth. 83, 163.
Note e. Yet one should also not turn away those of false belief out of hand, but seek in a Christian manner to win them for the pure doctrine.
Note f. If those who have hitherto belonged to a church of false belief wish to commune with us, they must
1. Make a confession of our doctrine.
Objection: Their mere coming to our altar is already a confession of our doctrine. — Yes, an outward one. Yet the reason for their coming may be the utmost indifference toward doctrine, or great ignorance.
2. Renounce their former false doctrine.
3. If they were members of a congregation of false belief, first leave it.
Note g. To prevent those of false belief from communing with us, we do not have open communion, but registration for confession.
B. Lutherans cannot go to the Lord's Supper in churches of false belief, but only in orthodox ones. By doing so they would
Deny the truth.
Make use of false teachers.
Confess the false doctrine.
Give offense to others.
Note a. If a soldier deserts the flag to which he has sworn and follows a foreign one, has he not left his fatherland and become a faithless traitor?
Note b. In particular, Lutherans cannot go to the Lord's Supper in Reformed churches, where they receive mere bread and wine.
Note c. If no Lutheran church can be reached, one should take comfort in the fact that only contempt for the sacrament condemns, not the lack of it. Faith is also strengthened through the Word.
4. Objections. a. Turning away those of false belief is unloving, stubborn. — True love consists in keeping one's neighbor from sin.
b. But we are all Christians! — Here stands God's command: Depart.
c. The Lord's Supper is Christ's Lord's Supper, and you act as though it were yours. — Precisely because it is Christ's and not ours, we must act according to his instruction.
d. By this we close the way to the church for others. — No, we only require that everyone come in by the right way.
e. But what if a case of necessity arises? — If it is right in a case of necessity, it is always right.
f. The pastors in Germany and here are themselves a veritable sample card of false doctrine — why should one be so exacting with the members?
g. It does not matter about the pastor, so long as the Lord's Supper itself is correct. — One should not take the Lord's Supper from teachers of false belief.
