Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

13. Time and again the pope has sought to suppress Bible reading. To this end, in the papacy a. Scripture has been reviled. It has been compared, for example, to Aesop's fables, to a waxen nose; b. Bibles have been burned singly and by the thousands. Schulb. 22, 130. Luth. 44, 92. 29, 82. 50, 43; c. Bible readers have been harassed, their Bibles taken from their houses, Bible sellers sometimes burned as well. Note. The heathen, too, have done this. [See] "Persecution of Christians." d. Bible societies condemned as a plague, e.g. Pius VII, 1816. Leo XII, 1824. Gregory XVI, 1844. Pius IX, 1846. Note. The Catholic Bible Society at Regensburg, [founded] 1805, was dissolved again in 1817 by a papal bull: Pronouncements of popes, Catholic bishops, and councils that forbade reading the Bible: Luth. 63, 232. Gregory VII, 1073-85. Il. 88, 28. Luth. 29, 81. Innocent III, 1198-1226. Son. 1902, 9. Il. 88, 28. Council of Toulouse. Council of Tarragona. Council of Oxford. Joachim of Brandenburg, 1524 [date uncertain in source]. Pius IV, 1564, also forbade the Bible translated by Catholic scholars. Clement VIII took from the bishops the power to grant permission for Bible reading. Cochlaeus: "This thoroughly corrupt article of trade." A number of Catholic bishops at Bologna, 1553. Clement XI, 1713, condemned the propositions on Bible reading by Quesnel, in his bull Unigenitus. Pius VI, 1794. 1887: the translation of the Gospels by Lasserre forbidden. Luth. 44, 70. Leo XIII, 1896. — L. W. 13, 117. 118. Note a. By this the pope proves himself to be Antichrist. — He takes from his subjects their weapons and renders them defenseless. He has the water pipes that supply the city with water cut off. Note b. Why does he forbid Bible reading? 1. Out of pride. Pelagians believe that after all there is still something good in man. 2. Out of lust for power. 3. Out of cunning. He wants to conceal the deception of the papacy. Note c. Indulgence has never been attached to Bible reading. Note d. Catholics must ask their priests what God has written. Note e. Clement I, bishop of Rome, called for Bible reading. Clement XIII forbade it as blasphemous. — A father can forbid his children today something he permitted them yesterday. Note f. Now the Bible is even printed in Rome. Note g. The wonderful preservation of the Bible despite all hostility is proof of its divine origin. Note h. Luther's Bible stands in the catalog of forbidden books.

— Off. 1, 3: Selig iſt, der da lieſt. 10. Bibelleſen ſei nicht verboten. Man müſſe bloß vorher um Erlaubnis bitten. — Das zeigt eben, daß everboten iſt. Nur denen wird das Bibelleſen erlaubt. die ſie katholiſch leſen können.

14. Objections of the Catholics: 1. Bible reading is not necessary. One can also have the blessing of the Word from the sermon. Rom. 10:17. 2. Bible reading, they say, is not commanded in Scripture. 3. The Bible is too difficult for laypeople to understand. One must not give children strong food. — If one teaches them that Scripture is obscure, they will from the outset have no desire for it. 4. Reading Scripture, they say, does more harm than good. — Rev. 1:3: Blessed is he that readeth. 5. It is a waste to cast the Bible before the people in this way. 6. No general prohibition of the Bible, they say, was ever issued by a general council. 7. They would have no objection to correct translations. 8. Only the reading of the translation in the vernacular is forbidden, they say. — That is prohibition enough. 9. There have always been, they say, both before and after the Reformation, Catholic Bibles that were also read. Many Catholics read the Bible nowadays. — The pope must under the circumstances tolerate this. If he cannot prevent it, it is nevertheless better for him that they read a Catholic Bible rather than a Lutheran one. 10. Bible reading, they say, is not forbidden. One need only first ask permission. — That shows precisely that it is forbidden. Bible reading is permitted only to those who can read it in a Catholic way.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
