Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Anm. a.

Note a. That is a proof of the truth of the account. Were the various accounts to agree word for word, as in the transcript of an examining judge, the thought of a prearranged fraud would easily arise. Note b. Sometimes, to be sure, we now lack the connecting link to be able to put all the accounts together in the right order. This may be due largely to our ignorance of the place and circumstances.

6. Widerſprüche

B. a. Mark. 16, 8: ſagten niemand nichts. Luk. 24, 9: verkündigten das alles. b. Mark. 16, 13: denen glaubten ſie auch nicht. Luk. 24, 34: ſie glaubten. c. Matth. 28. 1: Zwei Frauen. Luk. 21, 10: mehr Frauen. d. Matth. 28. 2: der Engel ſaß auf dem Stein. Mark. 16, 5: im Grabe. ů e. Mark. 16, 5: ein Engel. Luk. 24, 4: Zwei Engel. f. Matth. 28, 7: Jeſus wollte ſeine Jünger in Galiläa ſehen. Die andern berichten von Erſcheinungen in Jeruſalem. Anm.

6. Contradictions. In the apostles' accounts there are supposed to be contradictions. Schleiermacher: most of the contradictions, e.g., a. Mark 16, 8: said nothing to any man. Luke 24, 9: told all these things. b. Mark 16, 13: neither believed they them. Luke 24, 34: they believed. c. Matt. 28, 1: two women. Luke 24, 10: more women. d. Matt. 28, 2: the angel sat upon the stone. Mark 16, 5: in the grave. e. Mark 16, 5: one angel. Luke 24, 4: two angels. f. Matt. 28, 7: Jesus wanted to see his disciples in Galilee. The others report appearances in Jerusalem. Note. The disciples had simply not obeyed Jesus' command to go to Galilee. g. Matt. 28, 1. 5: Mary Magdalene received the Easter message from the angel's mouth. According to John 20, 1. 2. 12, not so. Note. Mary had turned back as soon as she saw the stone rolled away. h. Matt. 28, 9: Christ appears to the three women on the way home. John 20, 14: only to Mary. Note. Those were two different appearances. Against this: 1. every narrator has the right to highlight main persons and pass over in silence persons who appear to him as secondary. Compare Luke 24, 12 (and Peter) with 24, 24 (and certain of them which were with us). 2. When one reports something about which the other is silent, that is no contradiction. 3. Precisely these apparent contradictions show that we are not dealing here with a fraud. Note. The four accounts can be harmonized most beautifully without contradiction. Easter harmony. This too refutes the talk of contradictions.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
