predigt! Anm. a. Die Kirche wird in Geſellſchaftslokale umgewandelt. 8. Anm. b. Was iſt damit gewonnen für den Himmel? — Nichts. 1. Der Unglaube wird dadurch nicht gebeſſert. 2. 2 Petr. W. Anm. a. Fruchtbarkeit in allen guten Werken. Anm. Fortſchritt in Lehrtätigkeit, Predigt, Schule, Konfirmandenunterricht, Miſſion, Zucht, Liebestätigkeit. Min. Syn. 1902, 19. Anm. a. Anm. d. Der rechte Fortſchritt iſt kein natürliches Werk, ſondern Gottes Werk, gewirkt durchs Evangelium. Homiletik. 24. Sonntag nach Trin. — Epi. Der rechte Fortſchritt. Wir ſollen a. wachſen in der Erkenntnis, b. ſolches Wachstum auch im Wandel beweiſen.

Note a. The church is turned into a social hall. Note b. What is gained by this for heaven? — Nothing. 1. Unbelief is not thereby improved. 2. One wants to do evil that good may come, and loses sight of the goal. 3. Whoever seeks to move people to Christian virtue by human means simply makes the attainment of his purpose impossible. 4. God's kingdom is built only by God's word. 5. New measures are symptoms of decline, forerunners of death. Note c. That people reach for new means comes from forgetting what faith is. One can arrive at a belief in an all-loving Father who wants to punish no sin, and at a redeemer-status of Christ merely through his example, even without the Gospel. Objection. We want first to draw people to church, so that we can then win them. — Instead of winning them, one loses the few Christians one still has in the church. Note d. To be sure, the sermon should be timely, adapted to the needs of the congregation; c. the norm. What God has commanded his Church holds for all times. What was right a thousand years ago is right today too. The norm is not changed like the statutes of a country. Yet here too people nowadays want to progress, that is, to become freer, more tolerant, not to practice in all things according to Scripture, e.g., women as pastors, a temporary calling, open communion, union. Many a one is received into the congregation whom Paul would have excluded. — All this is nothing but rebellion. 7. The right, God-pleasing progress. There is a progress pleasing to God. 1 Pet. 2:2: that ye may grow thereby. A Christian should grow, and this growth should continue through his whole life. Eph. 4:13: till we all come. This progress is a growth a. in knowledge. 2 Pet. 3:18: grow in grace and knowledge. Col. 1:9-11: be filled with the knowledge, etc. 1 Tim. 4:13: give attendance to reading. No one should be satisfied with the knowledge he has. Note a. The right progress consists in this, that one opens the little treasure-chest and comes to recognize ever better the treasures that lie within it. Note b. The development does not go on outside us, but within us: b. in faith and trust. How weak is our faith! How often the apostle exhorts us to become strong in faith! c. in conduct, in sanctification. Col. 1:9-11. Phil. 3:12: but I follow after, etc. We are never finished with putting to death the old man and putting on the new man. Fruitfulness in all good works. Note. He who progresses in knowledge takes his sin more exactly from day to day and is driven ever more to Christ; d. in the use of the means of grace, e. in zeal for the kingdom of God. 1 Cor. 15:58: abound in the work of the Lord. A wide field for progress! Progress in teaching activity, preaching, school, confirmation instruction, mission, discipline, works of love. Min. Syn. 1902, 19. Note a. When preachers strive to discharge their office ever more carefully, when Christians become ever more diligent to maintain church and school and to carry on mission work, that is the right progress. Note b. A congregation in which this progress is lacking is dying, and is like a child that no longer grows but wastes away. Note c. Unfortunately, things often go backward among us in faith, love, and conduct. Note d. The right progress is no natural work, but God's work, wrought through the Gospel. Homiletics. 24th Sunday after Trinity — Epistle. The right progress. We should a. grow in knowledge, b. show such growth also in our conduct.
