1. A distinction is to be made between Antichrist in the narrower and wider sense.
a. In the wider sense everything is antichrist that is hostile to Christ: unbelief, sects, lodges, Turks, Muhammad, etc. 1 John 2, 18: many antichrists.
Note. Judas is the traitor. Yet there are still many Judases who have the mind and spirit of the traitor.
b. In the narrower sense there is but one Antichrist, the great Antichrist kat' exochen [par excellence].

Vers 3.
Anm. a.
So könnte man den Papſt nennen ſchon wegen ſeiner eigenen Sünde. Aber wir haben es hier damit nicht zu tun. Er heißt ſo, weil er Sünden macht und in Sünden ſtürzt;
Anm. a.
Anm. b. Der Papſt ſetzt ſich in allen Stücken wider Chriſtum, iſt eine tatſächliche Negation Chriſti. Vergl.: Tradition. Bibelverbot. Unbefleckte Empfängnis. Transſubſtantiation. Kelchentziehung. Meßopfer. Ab⸗— laß. Heilige. Reliquien. Fegfeuer. Unfehlbarkeit u. ſ. w.
Anm. c. Selbſt den Engeln gebot er in einer Bulle. daß ſie die Seelen derer, ſo als Pilger nach Rom unterwegs ſtürben, in den Himmel bringen;
Matth. 2J, 15: Der Greuel der Verwüſtung ſteht an der heiligen Stätte.
Anm. a. Der Tempel Gottes iſt die Chriſtenheit. 1 Kör. 3, 16. 2 Kor. 6, 16.
Anm. b.
Anm. c. Der Antichriſt kann nicht ein bloß weltlicher Regent ſein;
Anm. a.
Einwand. Der geweisſagte Antichriſt werde ſich

Vers 7.
a. Die Bosheitregt ſich ſchon. Der Abfall begann ſchon damals. Diotrephes. 3 Joh. 10. Viele Widerchriſten. 1 Joh. 2, 18.
Anm.
Vers 8.
a. Der Boshaftige wirdoffenbart.
Das
iſt geſchehen durch Luthers Reformation.
Sie iſt ge⸗
fallen, Babylon, die große Stadt. Off. 14.
Nun kann
jeder leicht den Antichriſt erkennen.
Anm. a. Das wußte Luther auch.
Anm. b. Dafür ſollen wir Gott danken.
Anm. c. Offenbar werden. Es handelt ſich
um ein Geheimnis. Off. 17, 5.
Eph. 6, 17.
Anm. a.
Anm. b. Darum können die Weltmächte nicht der Antichriſt ſein, weil das Evangelium die Weltmächte be— ſtehen läßt;
Anm. a.
Anm. b. Der Herr wird ihn umbringen.
Mit unſrer Macht iſt nichts getan.
Anm. c. Grabau: Durch die Reformation ſei der An— tichriſt aus der Kirche hinausgeworfen;
Anm. a.
Offenbarung 17.
Summa.
Anm. a.

2. The Antichrist prophesied in 2 Thess. 2 is the Pope at Rome. The entire description that Scripture gives fits him alone:
Verse 3.
a. "That day shall not come, except." The Antichrist is a sign of the last time.
b. "Except there come a falling away first." Antichristianity is apostasy, not merely from individual doctrines, but apostasy from Christ.
Note a. The Pope anathematizes the doctrine of justification by grace alone. That is apostasy from the essence of Christianity. There is no greater abomination.
Note b. Even if one takes Rev. 14, 20 literally, that the blood which the Antichrist sheds would reach to the horses' bridles, such a bloodbath would still not be as bad as the murder of souls committed by the Pope.
Note c. The greatest enmity against Christ exists where one sets up one's own righteousness and puts it in Christ's place.
Note d. Also, in that the Pope rejects the certainty of salvation, he overthrows the foundation of Christianity;
c. "and that man of sin be revealed," i.e., come forth freely and openly in his full wickedness and shamefulness;
d. "the man of sin." One could call the Pope this already because of his own sin. But that is not what is meant here. He is so called because he manufactures sins and plunges people into sins;
e. "the son of perdition": who leads not only himself but also his own in droves into the abyss.
Verse 4.
a. "Who opposeth": the lawless one, who abolishes and alters God's laws according to his own will, e.g., grants divorce, dispenses from oaths;
b. "and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped": he passes off his own commands as divine commands, does not let Christians be saved without his authority. He tramples everything holy underfoot.
Note a. Therefore he is called Antichrist, because he is the exact opposite of Christ and sets himself in Christ's place.
Note b. The Pope sets himself in all points against Christ; he is a factual negation of Christ. Compare: tradition, the ban on the Bible, the immaculate conception, transubstantiation, withholding of the cup, the sacrifice of the Mass, indulgences, saints, relics, purgatory, infallibility, etc.
Note c. He even commanded the angels in a bull that they should bring to heaven the souls of those who died on pilgrimage to Rome;
c. "so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God" - not in a pigsty, but in the Christian church. Matt. 24, 15: the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place.
Note a. The temple of God is Christendom. 1 Cor. 3, 16. 2 Cor. 6, 16.
Note b. Where the Pope sits, in the midst of baptized Christian children, there is the church.
Note c. He "sitteth," that is, he has set up his throne and seat and rules.
Note c (further). The Antichrist cannot be a merely secular ruler;
d. "shewing himself that he is God" - not that he boasts of a divine essence (then he would stand outside of Christendom), but such that he equips himself as God's representative with divine power.
Note a. The Pope not only attributes to himself a divine attribute, infallibility, he is also deified by his own followers.
Objection. The prophesied Antichrist would claim a divine nature for himself. - That is not written.
Verse 7.
a. "The mystery of iniquity doth already work." The apostasy already began at that time. Diotrephes. 3 John 10. Many antichrists. 1 John 2, 18.
Note. The Antichrist must therefore be something that was already stirring at that time.
b. "only he who now letteth will let." Who it is that hinders he does not say. - As long as the Roman emperors had the power to persecute the Christians, no bishop could attain power and honor.
Note. It cannot have been civil order or worldly police, since these are not to be done away with, but are to remain.
Verse 8.
a. "then shall that Wicked be revealed." This happened through Luther's Reformation. She has fallen, Babylon the great city. Rev. 14. Now everyone can easily recognize the Antichrist.
Note a. Luther knew this too.
Note b. For this we should thank God.
Note c. "revealed" - it is a matter of a mystery. Rev. 17, 5. Great is the mystery of godliness, but its counterpart is the mystery of iniquity. Under the appearance of the greatest holiness he will destroy the church. Rev. 13, 11: like a lamb and spoke as a dragon.
b. "with the spirit of his mouth," that is, with the Word, the sword of the Spirit. Eph. 6, 17.
Note a. Even now the papacy can only be fought with the Gospel.
Note b. Therefore the world powers cannot be the Antichrist, because the Gospel lets the world powers continue to exist;
c. "shall destroy" - kill, not annihilate. He has lost his power over all who recognize him as Antichrist.
Note a. The church is to be delivered from this tyrant too.
Note b. The Lord will destroy him. Nothing is accomplished by our own power.
Note c. Grabau: through the Reformation the Antichrist was cast out of the church;
d. "and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming." 2 Thess. 2, 8.
Note a. He will therefore remain until the Last Day.
Note b. Worldly power has been taken from the Pope, but he has not the slightest thought of leaving the field; he is still just as zealous and active.
Verse 9: with lying wonders, signs, and miracles. - Verse 11: strong delusion.
Objection: the signs are to happen among those who perish. But the Pope sits within the church, among Christians. Therefore the Pope cannot be the Antichrist. One must think of something else, e.g., the spiritists.
Revelation 17.
Verse 2: with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication.
Verse 6: drunken with the blood of the saints.
Objection of the Catholics: if Rome puts heretics to death, their blood can no more be called the blood of the saints than the blood of thieves and murderers. Luth. 41, 62.
Verse 16: they shall make the whore desolate, eat her flesh. Her worldly dominion has been torn from her.
Verse 9: the seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. - The seven-hilled city of Rome.
In sum: everything fits the Pope. The prophecy is fulfilled. If one calls to mind what Scripture says of the Antichrist, one must forcibly shut one's eyes not to see that the Pope is the Antichrist. See the conclusion.
Note a. The doctrine that the Pope is the Antichrist is scriptural doctrine. The fathers were certain of their case from Scripture.
Note b. Just as we prove from Scripture that Jesus is the Messiah, so we prove from Scripture that the Pope is the Antichrist. That the name "Pope" does not appear in the prophecies has nothing to do with the matter. From the prophecies of the Old Testament anyone could recognize that Jesus was the Messiah, although the name Jesus did not stand there.
Note c. That the Pope is the Antichrist can also be demonstrated "from behind," namely from the history and from the life of the popes.
Note d. If one holds fast to this truth, that the Pope is the Antichrist, one can also rightly understand the Revelation of John.

4. Einwände.

4. Objections.
a. The doctrine that the Pope is the Antichrist is, after all, merely a conclusion drawn from Scripture. - But if this conclusion is correct, then to contradict it is folly.
b. If one wants to present a doctrine as scriptural doctrine, it must stand in Scripture in clear words. - That would be the same as if the Reformed demanded that the words must stand in Scripture: Christ is truly present in the Lord's Supper with his body and blood.
c. The interpretation of the Antichrist in our confession stood under the influence of historical events. When the Pope was a world-ruling lord, even the Turk was not so feared. It was under these impressions that the Smalcald Articles arose.
d. According to Rev. 17, 18 the Antichrist is to have dominion over the kings of the earth, which, however, is not the case with the Pope. - It does not say that he must always, even in the last times, have a world empire.
e. The Pope fights against unbelief as we do. Therefore he cannot be the Antichrist. Is Satan divided against himself? - The Pope does not fight against unbelief toward Christ, but against unbelief toward the Pope.
f. There have also been pious popes (models of piety). If such an old man as Pius IX is the Antichrist, then this Antichrist is a very venerable and lovable personality. - Let no one be deceived. The goal of all popes is the same. Not the person, but the office makes the Pope. - The angels too are dear and pious, and yet Paul says: though an angel from heaven should preach any other gospel unto you, etc., let him be accursed.
g. According to Scripture the Antichrist seems only to come at the end of the world. - The end of the world has come upon us. 1 Cor. 10, 11. The entire era of the New Testament is the end of the world.
h. All of history is against it.

Antitheſe
5. Antitheſe. Der Antichriſt ſoll ſein
Anm. Wenn man ſelbſt Luther für dieſe Meinung
anführen will, ſo beruht das auf Täuſchung. Luther
große Unglaube geweisſagt war;
b. Der Pantheismus. — Die Pantheiſten aber ſind
außerhalb der Kirche:
c. Die Weltmächte. — Der Antichriſt ſoll jedoch „durch
den Geiſt ſeines Mundes“, 2 Theſſ. 2, 8., durch das
Evangelium umgebracht werden. Das Evangelium läßt
die Weltmächte beſtehen.
e. Eine Einzelperſon, die
1. ſchon gekommen iſt, z. B. Grant, Mohammed, Navoleon;
Vers 7:
tann, leidet an großer Unwahrſcheinlich—
eit.
Anm. a.
vom Brot allein. Gebt dem Kaiſer, was des Kaiſers
iſt. Der Sabbath. Mark. 2, 27.
Summa: Viele, auch Lutheraner wie Luthardt, Hof⸗
mann u.
Anm. a. Woher kommt das?
2. Viele romaniſieren in Lehre und Praxis und
laſſen ſich vom Einfluß des Papſttums blenden.
3. Viele warten auf ein 1000jähriges Reich;
ihnen kommt ein zu erwartender Antichriſt paſſend.
4. Viele ſind vom Evangelium abgefallen. Wer

5. Antithesis. The Antichrist is supposed to be
a. unbelief. Had Luther had any inkling that such apostasy would come to utter unbelief, he certainly would not have declared the Pope, but unbelief, to be the Antichrist.
Against this:
1. Unbelief does not want at all to set up its seat in the temple of God.
2. It does not come with signs and wonders, but denies all wonders.
3. Unbelief laughs and mocks at Christians, to be sure, but mostly lets them alone. Freedom of belief.
4. Unbelief is no falling away from faith.
5. The most powerful onslaughts of unbelief, e.g., the French Revolution, have run out into the sand. The papacy, however, has maintained its dominion against Christ.
6. Most bloodshed comes not from unbelief, but from the Pope.
Note. If one wants to cite Luther himself for this opinion, that rests on a misunderstanding. Luther knew quite well that, alongside the Antichrist, great unbelief too was prophesied;
b. pantheism. - But the pantheists are outside the church;
c. the world powers. - But the Antichrist is to be destroyed "with the spirit of his mouth," 2 Thess. 2, 8, through the Gospel. The Gospel lets the world powers continue to exist.
d. heathen Rome. - Then John would not have needed to marvel so at seeing the woman drunk with the blood of the saints. But that Christian Rome is drunk - that is a thing to marvel at;
e. a single person, who
1. has already come, e.g., Grant, Muhammad, Napoleon;
2. or is still to come in the future; a world conqueror who will gather around himself all antichristian elements; a Jew sprung from the tribe of Dan, who is to be born at Babylon.
Against this:
1. In the time of the apostles wickedness was already stirring. At the end of the world the Antichrist is to be brought to his end. It must therefore be a succession of persons.
2. 2 Thess. 2, 6: "what withholdeth." Verse 7: "he who now letteth." There is a "what" and a "he" - power and power-holder.
3. The possibility that the prophecy of the Antichrist could still be fulfilled in some other way than in the papacy suffers from great improbability.
Note a. Those people who still hope for the Antichrist are like the Jews who hope for Christ while he is already here. While they wait for the Antichrist, they are devoured by him.
Note b. Even the Catholics want the entire succession of popes to be regarded as a single pope.
Objection: the man of sin, the son of perdition, must be a single person. - It can also designate a class, e.g., "man does not live by bread alone." "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's." The Sabbath. Mark 2, 27.
In sum: many, even Lutherans such as Luthardt, Hofmann, etc., do not believe, or no longer believe, that the Pope is the Antichrist.
Note a. Where does this come from?
1. Many are indifferent to pure doctrine. They do not recognize that pure doctrine is the most precious treasure, false doctrine the greatest abomination.
2. Many romanize in doctrine and practice and let themselves be dazzled by the influence of the papacy.
3. Many wait for a thousand-year kingdom; a still-to-be-expected Antichrist suits them.
4. Many have fallen away from the Gospel. Whoever does not recognize the Gospel in its full fullness also does not rightly recognize its greatest enemy.

6. The Iowa Synod. The Iowa Synod admits that the Pope is a part of the Antichrist, and also speaks of the Pope as the Antichrist, yet they find no contradiction to the Confession in leaving the question open: whether the Antichrist prophesied in 2 Thess. 2 is the Pope or a single person who may still come in the future.
Note a. Both convictions are to have equal right among them.
Note b. That the Antichrist is still to be expected in the future is for them no synodical doctrine, nor a condition of fellowship for their members.
Note c. To obligate pastors to the doctrine that the Pope is the Antichrist is, for them, a yoke of an unheard-of demand.
Note c (further). This alone, however, is not the reason why we cannot work together with them. The reason lies elsewhere.

7. This article is not a fundamental article; one can also be saved without recognizing the Pope as Antichrist.
Note a. If someone thinks he cannot clearly recognize this doctrine from God's Word, and therefore denies it, we do not on that account deny him Christianity.
Note b. Whoever denies it against his own conviction ceases to be a Christian. Persistent, willful resistance against God's Word annuls Christianity.
Note c. Denial of this doctrine is therefore not in itself yet a reason to dissolve church fellowship. That would mean causing division.
Note d. This is not meant to say
1. that little depends on this doctrine, that one could pass over it, let it drop entirely;
2. that everyone may believe as he wishes in this matter;
3. that the doctrine has nothing at all to do with salvation. God's Word warns so earnestly against the Antichrist and says: if anyone lets himself be seduced by the Antichrist, the smoke of his torment shall ascend for ever and ever.
Note e. Whoever denies this doctrine
1. is not a confessionally faithful Lutheran. He has a defect. Heshusius: not even a taste for piety. O. 67, 20. 19. This doctrine is a symbol and hallmark of Lutheranism;
2. will not fulfill his duty to warn against the Pope as he should, once the opposition between faith and works, merit and grace, Lutheranism and papacy, begins to fade for him;
3. must also deny that the Reformation was that prophesied divine work. 2 Thess. 2, 8.
Note f. If one denies this doctrine and meanwhile dreams of a future Antichrist,
1. attention is diverted from the actual significance of the Pope to the future.
2. the Last Day is pushed far into the future. It then can no longer come today.
Note g. Although this doctrine is not fundamental, a synod should nevertheless not tolerate public attacks against our confession on the part of its preachers, so that confusion not be caused among the simple. Every preacher should know, believe, and teach this doctrine, or confess his deviation from the confession.
8. Importance. Usefulness of this doctrine. The doctrine that the Pope is the Antichrist is of great importance: a. it teaches us to rightly recognize our chief enemy and is a mighty weapon against the papacy; b. it serves to strengthen our faith. By everything the Pope says and does, Scripture is confirmed;
