Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

§1. Confession before God. §2. Before one's neighbor, whom one has wronged. §3. Before the preacher. §4. General confession. §5. Enumerating one's sins. §6. Historical background. §7. Benefit. §8. [...] §10. The introduction of confession. §11. Auricular confession. §12. The seal of confession. §13. 1. To confess means to acknowledge, to avow. This can take place before God, before the neighbor one has wronged, and before the preacher. Note. On the Fifth Chief Part, see Office of the Keys. 2. Confession before God. a. A true confession before God requires a humble confession of sins and a believing plea for their forgiveness. 1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, etc. Note a. True patterns and models of a right confession are David's penitential prayers. Ps. 32:5. Note b. Before one can confess one's sins, one must recognize them according to the Ten Commandments. Fifth Chief Part. Note c. Confession should take place without hypocrisy, not merely with the mouth. "Confession is repentance itself." b. Confession before God is necessary. Whoever omits it, conceals his sin, or even denies it, 1. makes his sin all the greater, 2. has no grace and forgiveness. 1 John 1:10: If we say that we have no sin. Prov. 28:13: He that covereth his sins. Ps. 32:3–5: When I kept silence. (Judas. John 21:17. Gen. 4:9: Am I my brother's keeper? Cain. Gehazi. 2 Kings 5:25: Thy servant went nowhere.) Note a. When a sick person conceals his illness from the doctor, it can sometimes cost him his life. Note b. What folly it is to deny one's sin before God! God knows the sin anyway! One never comes to peace without a sincere confession. Note c. Whoever confesses his sin to the Lord has forgiveness. 1 John 1:9. c. Before God one should plead guilty to all sins. Note a. We could not possibly name every individual sin. Ps. 19:12. — There are indeed examples in Scripture where people confess individual sins before God, but general confessions of sin are still more frequent. Luke 5:8: I am a sinful man. Luke 18:13: God be merciful to me a sinner. Note b. Even if we have not committed every gross deed, we have nevertheless transgressed every commandment.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
