2. No man can earn or deserve spiritual gifts through diligence and effort, as one does money and property. — 1 Pet. 4:10: the gift he has received. Ma. 25, 136;
b. in God. He is the giver of every good gift. Jas. 1:17: cometh down from above. Hence "gift." 1 Cor. 12:7: the manifestation of the Spirit. V. 11: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit. Matt. 25:14-30. The talents entrusted.

Ma. 25, 137.
Anm. a.
Anm. f. Geiſtliche Gaben haben nur die Chriſten.

3. As with earthly gifts (see Earthly Goods), so God also distributes spiritual gifts differently. 1 Cor. 12:11: dividing to every man severally as he will. V. 8: to one is given — to another is given. Matt. 25:14-15: to one five talents, to another three. Neb. 89, 29. What one has in rich measure, another lacks. Ma. 25, 137.
Note a. God gives the gifts to whom he will, and does not therein judge according to men's ability and fitness.
Note b. How different are the gifts of pastors! — Athanasius, Luther, Melanchthon. — No two men are alike. This is already evident in school. One cannot cut pipes from every kind of wood.
Note c. God has given more gifts to the New Testament Church than to the Old Testament Church, and more to our synod than to other synods. (Pure doctrine.)
Note d. No Christian goes away entirely empty-handed. 1 Cor. 12:7: to every man. 1 Pet. 4:10: every man. Let no one say he has no gift with which to serve the Church and the world. Walth. Epi. 336. Il. 98, 79.
Note e. Whomever God gives an office, him he also equips with the necessary gifts. Whom he sends, him he also makes fit.
Note f. Only Christians have spiritual gifts.

4. Because the gifts come from God, one should
a. show oneself thankful for them. Already in ordinary life one gives thanks for every gift received.
Note. If one should already thank God for bodily goods, how much more for spiritual ones. — What are all the treasures of the world compared to the spiritual gifts?
b. not murmur or be sad when we have received fewer gifts than others. The weakest members of the body are often the most necessary. 1 Cor. 12:22.
Note. It is a temptation for pastors and teachers to think they do not have the necessary gifts.
c. not be puffed up over one's gifts. 1 Cor. 4:7: What hast thou that thou didst not receive?
