Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Indulgence. Essays on this. Luth. 78, 145. 155. The indulgence traffic of the Roman church and the Reformation which was blessed as a result of it. Tract. The biblical doctrine of indulgence. 2—279. Il. 88, 39. 1. The pope's indulgence a. Remits temporal and ecclesiastical penalties. Note. If the sin is forgiven, then the temporal penalty too is remitted. b. Flows from the treasury of merit of the church, which consists of the superabundant merit of Christ and the superabundant good works of the saints. Note. The regenerate cannot even perfectly fulfill the commandments, much less perform superabundant good works. Luke 17:10. c. Can be obtained 1. Through money. Tetzel. Still today as well. 2. Through praying prescribed prayers and Ave Marias; devout viewing of images, and all sorts of penitential exercises, e.g., climbing up the Pilate's Staircase. Note. This theory developed out of the strict penitential practice of the ancient church. d. Can be 1. A plenary indulgence for all sins, e.g., on the feast of the Finding of the Cross. 2. A partial one, for certain sins, for a certain time, e.g., for 5 Our Fathers, 5 Ave Marias, and 5 Glory Be to Gods: 300 days. Or for 7 Ave Marias, 7 years and 7 times 40 days. Or for every devout Our Father, 500 days. e. Can be granted 1. For sins already committed. 2. For future sins, e.g., indulgence for the sin of stealing from Tetzel's money chest. f. Applies to one's own person, but can also be applied to souls in purgatory. g. Can be an extraordinary one, granted by the pope on special occasions, e.g., 1. For the pope's 50th anniversary of priesthood. 2. For a congregation's 50th anniversary. 3. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. 4. To all who carried wood to a stake for burning. 40 days' indulgence. h. Particular stories 1. Someone who had bought indulgence for 14 souls asked the indulgence-seller whether these souls were now certainly out of purgatory. When the seller swore that they were, the former put his money back in his pocket: there was now no more urgency about the souls.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
