Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Note. Individual cases: 1. The covetous, 1 Cor. 5:11, when their covetousness is manifest. Covetousness usually escapes the judgment of others. 2. Idolaters, who run off, like Demas, into the wild, disorderly life of the world. 3. Drunkards, when their impenitence has been demonstrated. — If they promise improvement but do not keep their promise, they are to be refused the Lord's Supper until they show improvement. People who commit a crime while drunk are to be dealt with on account of their drunkenness. 4. On account of neglecting congregational meetings, the ban is appropriate at most when someone never comes and manifest ill will is present. 5. In the case of membership in sinful labor unions, the congregation cannot say, "If you do not withdraw at once, you will be placed under the ban," since this sin does not necessarily drive out faith immediately. 6. Professional dancers; b. for manifest sins. A sin is manifest 1. when everyone recognizes it as a sin and even the one to be banned can be convinced: I deserve to be excluded, yet I still will not repent. Note. As long as there is still dispute over whether something is a sin or not, no ban can be imposed; 2. when it is entirely beyond doubt that the sinner has committed the sin and is convicted of his deed. This is the case when the person in question does not deny the deed, or when sufficiently credible witnesses are available. Note a. To condemn someone on mere suspicion (hearsay, outward appearance, circumstantial evidence, as before a civil court) is sin. Think no evil of anyone. Suspicion. Note b. Christ did not place Judas under the ban, because his sin was not manifest before men. Note c. If the person in question denies the deed and no witnesses are available, the judgment must be left to God. Note d. One witness is no witness: c. for willful, obstinate denial of fundamental articles of Christian doctrine. Note a. Discipline should be exercised with respect to both life and doctrine. Note b. That discipline should be exercised in matters of doctrine is shown by Rom. 16:17: avoid them. 2 John 10...

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
