Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

3. plainly, outright. They shall scourge him and kill him, and the third day, etc. Note a. Had Christ only claimed after his resurrection that he had raised himself, unbelief could doubt whether this had actually happened. Note b. The disciples did not understand what this word was, Mark 9, 32, but the enemies remembered these words, Matt. 27, 63: We remember that this deceiver said, etc. Objection. These prophecies were made after the fact. Had they been foretold to the disciples, they would not have been so sad. 3. The particular circumstances of the resurrection. a. It consisted in this, that 1. body and soul, which had been separated in death, reunited. Awakening. Making alive; 2. Christ came forth from the grave. Resurrection. b. It happened 1. on a Sabbath day, Mark 16, 2, that is, on Sabbath day one, the first day of the week; 2. on the third day. 1 Cor. 15, 4. Hymn 105, 3. Scripture has not fixed the exact time. Objection a. How does this agree with Matt. 12, 39. 40: three days and three nights? Some therefore assume that Christ died on Thursday. Against this: 1. Christ died on the day of preparation (John 19, 14) or on the pre-Sabbath (Mark 15, 42), that is, on Friday. 2. "three days and three nights" is spoken synecdochically. 3. had Christ really been crucified on Thursday afternoon, then, if the three days were to be full, he could not have risen until Sunday afternoon. Objection b. The disciples had to let the Lord rise a day too early. On the third day, for the sake of the elders, all fraud would have been impossible. c. Christ is risen according to his human nature. Subjectum quo. Note. Did Christ, according to his human nature, raise himself? It is true, on the one hand, that Christ, even in death, refrained from the use of his divine majesty. On the other hand, Christ points the Jews to his own power as a sign of his sonship to God. Antithesis. The Reformed deny that Christ raised himself as man. d. His body was the same. John 20, 27. He kept the mark of the nails as his badges of honor.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
