Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Note a. The subiectum quo of conversion is the soul of man. Note b. The unwilling become willing. Conversion is the removal of resistance. Note c. Conversion does not consist 1. in a mere stirring of the feelings — the mourner's bench. See Repentance; 2. in a merely outward change. This helps the state, but not the person. If the devil of drunkenness goes out, the devil of self-righteousness may perhaps come in. Hos. 7:16: They return, but not to the most High. Joel 2:12: Rend your heart. Eph. 4:23: Be renewed in the spirit of your mind. Note d. Every merely outward conversion is hypocrisy. Whited sepulchres. Note e. Conversion is therefore a turning from evil to good. Jer. 3:12: Return. c. a new creation, a new birth, by which faith and spiritual life are created in us. 2 Cor. 5:17: a new creature. Gal. 6:15. John 1:13: born of God. 3:6: born of the Spirit. Eph. 2:10: created in Christ. Ps. 51:10: Create in me. Note a. Conversion does not consist in the creation of a new substance or a new nature, but in the kindling of new motions. — In rebirth, faculties and powers that already existed are not merely awakened (Semi-Pelagians), but faculties and powers that did not exist are bestowed. Note b. The bestowal of faith is conversion in the proper sense. Acts 11:21: believed and turned. Col. 2:12: risen through faith. 1 John 5:1: whosoever believeth is born of God. — Falling away consists in unbelief. — If a man is to be converted, an unbeliever must become a believer. L. W. 53, 199. Note c. How important in spiritual trial: Christianity does not consist in no longer having any sin, but in believing. Note d. The essence of conversion does not lie in the realm of sanctification. Note e. To be able to believe is conversion itself. — The smallest spark of faith is faith. § 13. Note f. What conversion is, is known best when one has experienced it oneself. Note g. Faith and justification coincide in time. If one wishes to distinguish them conceptually, faith precedes justification.

1. A distinction is to be made between the judicium occultum and the judicium universale. The hidden judgment takes place already in this life. John 3:18: he that believeth not is condemned already. The real decision falls within this life. Note a. Death brings the decision for everyone. Heb. 9:27: to die, and after that the judgment. Luke 16:23: and being in hell, etc. 23:43: Today shalt thou be with me, etc. Note b. The last judgment, Matt. 10:15, is called the final judgment as opposed to the judgments here on earth.

2. There is a judgment on the last day. Scripture bears witness to this in many places, e.g. Jude 14: the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his saints to execute judgment. Gen. 18:25: shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? Job 35:14: there is judgment before him. Ps. 7:12: God is a righteous judge. 9:9: he shall judge the world. 1 Sam. 2:10: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth. Eccl. 11:9: know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. 12:14: God shall bring every work into judgment. Is. 66:15. Matt. 7:22-23. 10:15. 25:31-46. 12:41. Mark 6:11. Luke 10:12, 14. Acts 17:31: God hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world. 2 Cor. 5:10: we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ. Rev. 20:11-13. — On the last day in the Old Testament, see L. W. 38, 132-142. Note a. That a final judgment is coming is already told us by 1. our conscience. Rom. 2:15: their thoughts accusing or else excusing one another. Those who have sinned always have their punishment before their eyes. Those who have committed nothing fear nothing; 2. our reason. Reason can conclude that God will one day set right the various injustices of this life (Ps. 73). Luth. 37, 78. Note b. That a judgment is coming is required by 1. God's righteousness. Whoever does good deserves reward, whoever does evil, punishment; 2. God's truth. Not one of his words shall fall to the ground. Luke 21:33: heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away; 3. Christ's honor. The day must come at last on which Christ, who has been rejected by unbelievers, reveals his majesty and glory. Note c. If we are justified through Christ, then we are also heirs of God, and we wait for the Savior to come and confirm us as such before the world. Thus this doctrine is bound up with justification. Note d. Our confessions also speak of this. Second Article: from thence he shall come again, etc. Konk. 43. 217. 30. Note e. Types of the last judgment. A prelude. 1. The condemnation of the devils. 2 Pet. 2:4. Jude 6. 2. the Flood. Matt. 24:38-39. Luke 17:26-27. 2 Pet. 2:5; 3. the destruction of Sodom. Luke 17:28. 2 Pet. 2:6; 4. the judgments of punishment upon Israel in the wilderness. 1 Cor. 10:5-10: and in one day fell 23,000. Heb. 4:6; 5. the destruction of Jerusalem. Note f. But the scoffers mock: Where is the promise of his coming? 2 Pet. 3:4-5. Because Christ has not come for so long, he will never come at all! — A bogeyman invented by the priests. — We should not let ourselves be led astray by this, Ma. 15, 351, for 1. God has said beforehand that scoffers will come, 2. they walk after their own lusts and willfully want to know nothing of it, 3. when the time until the last day seems long to us, let us consider that a thousand years are with God as one day; 4. God does not delay, but has patience with us unto repentance. Note g. Whoever does not believe in the first coming of Christ finds the second a double folly. Antithesis. Unitarians, Swedenborgians, etc. deny the day of judgment.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
