Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

1. Christians have an exceedingly glorious hope. Their hope is directed not toward earthly treasures and riches, but toward the heavenly goods. The object of their hope is a. Christ. 1 Tim. 1, 1: Jesus Christ, who is our hope. 1 Thess. 1, 3: in the hope which is our Lord Jesus. Ps. 62, 6: he is my hope. 71, 5: You are my hope; b. blessedness. Kol. 1, 5: the hope which is laid up for you in heaven. 1 Thess. 5, 8: hope of salvation. Röm. 5, 2: hope of future glory. 1 Petr. 1, 4: the undefiled, unfading inheritance. (Ma. 28, 19. 11. 175. 176.) Tit. 3, 7: heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Note a. This includes the hope of 1. preservation of the deposit in time, being kept in the faith, 2. a blessed death (7th Petition), 3. the redemption of the body, Röm. 8, 23, 4. the appearing of the glory of the great God, Tit. 2, 13. 1 Kor. 1, 7; 5. the resurrection of the body, 6. reunion with our loved ones in heaven. Note a. What is all earthly hope, all hope of the children of the world, compared with this hope! Happy is he who carries it in his heart! Even worldly people often envy Christians for it. W. 79, 92. Note b. We are already saved, yet in hope. Röm. 8, 24. (An heir still under age.) Note c. Hope looks to the future and awaits something coming, something desired. Here in hoping and in believing. Note d. We have one and the same hope of our calling. Eph. 4, 4. Note e. Hope is commanded by God. Ps. 27, 14: Wait for the Lord. 37, 7: wait on him. Tit. 2, 13: waiting for the blessed hope. 2 Petr. 3, 12: that you wait. Note f. Our hope shall soon be fulfilled: in a little while. When you see the signs of the last time, lift up your heads. W. 89, 59. Note g. Even the creation is subjected in hope. Röm. 8, 20. But its redemption consists in its destruction. Note h. It is precisely for the sake of their hope that Christians are most mocked.

2. Faith and hope. Both are essentially the same. The hope of the patriarchs was nothing but faith. Hope and faith are inseparably joined. Or. 1906, 23. Note. On the difference between faith and hope see Faith, § 25, Note h. Christians hope for a still more glorious unfolding of the salvation that they already now possess in faith.

3. Dieſe Hoffnung iſt das unterſcheidende Merkmal zwiſchen Chriſt und Uunchriſt. a. Unchriſten haben keine Hoffnung. I Theſſ. Anm. a. . Gottes 1. Welches iſt der Grund der Chriſtenhoffnung? Er iſt nicht Berechnung unſerer Vernunft, ſondern a. Chriſtus, Chriſti Auferſtehen. 1 Petr. 1. 3: wiedergeboren zu einer lebendigen Hoffnung durch die Auferſtehung Jeſu Chriſti. Chriſti Auferſtehung macht uns gewiß, daß alle unſere Schuld getilgt, das Le— ben erworben iſt. Lied 111. 2 Anm. a. Unſere Hoffnung iſt eine Frucht der Rechtſertigung und Verſöhnung. Anm. b.

3. This hope is the distinguishing mark between the Christian and the non-Christian. a. Non-Christians have no hope. 1 Thess. 4, 13: the others, who have no hope. Eph. 2, 12: therefore you had no hope. Sin, unbelief, blocks the way to it. Note a. Worldly people, too, indeed have many hopes, but they seek rest and peace not in Christ but in themselves, not for the soul but for the body. Note b. They also indeed hope for a heaven — even at the grave people plant hope — but they do not ground this hope on Christ, but on God's fatherly heart or on their own good works. "We are baptized, after all." Therefore their hope is bound up with much fear and doubt. b. Hope is found only among the children of God. 1. What is the ground of the Christian's hope? It is not a calculation of our reason, but a. Christ, Christ's resurrection. 1 Petr. 1, 3: begotten again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christ's resurrection makes us certain that all our guilt is blotted out, that life has been won. Hymn 111, 2. Note a. Our hope is a fruit of justification and reconciliation. Note b. The ground of hope among the children of the world is: things surely cannot always remain as they are. They ground their hope on their own merit; b. God's grace. 1 Petr. 1, 13: Set your hope wholly on grace; c. God's promise. Hope is grounded on the Word. Whatever is put forth as Christian hope must somewhere be written in Scripture. Without a promise, no hope. Note. This is the source of so many disappointed hopes among Christians, because they do not heed Scripture, for example: "But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel."

5. How does hope come into us? Man does not have the Christian hope from nature, from himself, any more than he has faith. It comes a. through the new birth. 1 Petr. 1, 3: begotten again to a living hope; b. from the gospel. — For this purpose God has given us the Scripture, that through patience and comfort of the Scriptures we might have hope. Röm. 15, 4. Ma. 31. 354. 355. Walth. Epi. 18. Note. Hope must also be nourished through the Word. We are to grow in hope. How could a Christian read the Scripture without being strengthened in hope? 6. Hoffnung iſt Gewißheit

L. W. 27, 523. Anm. a. Ma. 9, 380.

6. Hope is certainty. Christian hope is not a mere holding-as-true, or wishing, or surmising, but confidence, certainty. It will be fulfilled. Röm. 5, 5: hope does not disappoint. L. W. 27, 523. Note a. Christians are certain of their salvation. 2 Tim. 1, 12: I am persuaded. Ps. 73, 24: you receive me at last with honor. The Lord will preserve us unto salvation through faith. Note b. Hope is not less than faith, faith is not stronger than hope. Note c. The pledge and seal of our hope is the Holy Spirit. Note d. Any doctrine that conflicts with certain hope (the Pope's doctrine of doubt) must necessarily be false. Note e. Many, asked the question, "Do you also hope to be saved?" would answer: Yes, but what will come of it, I do not know. Note f. The world's hope comes to shame. Hoping and waiting make many a fool. Sir. 10, 28: The hope of the ungodly shall perish. 1, 7: The expectation of the unrighteous comes to nothing. Note g. We too have already seen many an earthly hope sink away, carried to the grave. Many a New Year's hope has not been fulfilled. Ma. 14. 5. 5. But Christian hope remains certain. It depends on the ground on which a hope rests. Ma. 9, 380.

7. Hope should be a. joyful. Röm. 12, 12: Be joyful in hope. 5, 2: we rejoice in hope. Note a. What man hopes for is always something joyful. Evil one only expects, but does not hope for it. Note b. The joyfulness of hope should also not be clouded or dampened by 1. the warnings in Scripture: Phil. 2, 12: with fear and trembling. 2 Kor. 7, 1. — These are not opposed to the certainty of salvation, 2. the afflictions of this present time. On the contrary: affliction produces patience, patience produces experience, experience produces hope; b. living. 1 Petr. 1, 3. Hope should not be a dead imagining that does not influence heart and life. It should work in us comfort and strengthening for endurance, diligence in sanctification, patience, love, delight in God's Word. — Through hope the estate of marriage should be consecrated. Ma. 2. 301. 305. Note. When someone has any great hopes concerning earthly things, these exert their influence on a person — the face lights up, the heart is of good cheer, and so on. Röm. 12, 12: joyful in hope; c. constant. Hebr. 6, 11: to hold fast the hope firm unto the end. We are to hold fast to hope, even when we see the joys and pleasures of this world before our eyes, or come into the cross and affliction.
