Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Note a. In order to redeem us, Christ had to be 1. true man, so that he could fulfill the Law for us, suffer, and die, 2. sinless, for only one who was himself without sin could take the sinner's place, 3. true God, so that he could overcome death and the devil. Whoever would overcome a lion must be stronger than the lion. Note b. The motive was nothing in us, but his infinite love. John 3:16: "For God so [loved the world]." Rom. 5:8: In this God commends his love toward us. Eph. 5:2: Christ loved us and gave himself for us. God had no need to redeem man. He would have remained blessed even had he let us perish. Note c. If you lay gravely ill, and someone came, lay down beside you, took your sickness upon himself, and died for you — that would be love! Song of Songs 8:6-7: Love is strong as death. "O love, love, you are strong." Hymn 73, 3. A story on this: how an Indian takes a worm out of the fire with his hand. Neb. 91, 47. Luth. 63, 41-42.

5. The ransom price. Redemption includes a ransoming by means of a price. Ps. 69:4: I must repay. 1 Cor. 6:20: bought. Acquired, that is, worked for with much toil, taken as spoil in battle; won, that is, gained through hard combat. This ransom price was a. not gold and silver. 1 Pet. 1:18-19. Note a. The payment or compensation had to be great enough, corresponding to the sinner's debt, and not merely a nominal one. Compensatio mere nominalis [a merely nominal compensation]. Note b. The Old Testament sacrifices were not sufficient; b. Christ's blood. 1 Pet. 1:19: with the precious blood of Christ. Col. 1:14. Eph. 1:7. The redemption through his blood. Rev. 5:9: purchased with your blood. Acts 20:28: purchased with his own blood. 1 John 1:7: The blood of Jesus Christ, his Son. Hebr. 12:24. "Who has redeemed me through his blood." Hymn 271, 1. "There is no savior besides me." Isa. 43:11. Note c. Why does Christ's blood have such power? Because he is true God, and his blood is God's blood. "Among all treasures no such jewel is to be found." Hymn 210, 3. Note d. Had Christ been a mere man (kenosis), then his payment would have had no sufficient

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
