Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

1 Moſ. 17, 8. 2 Moſ. 12. 24. 3 Moſ. 25, 46. 5 Moſ. 15, 17. ceremonial law, so that the synagogue might be buried with honor. Augustine. Mich. 89, 73. c. Christ did not come to destroy the Law. — Christ did not cast the Law aside, but fulfilled it. d. The apostle is so zealous against the ceremonial law only because the Galatians wanted to be made righteous by keeping it. — That is indeed true. But the whole task of the letter to the Galatians is to show that the ceremonial law is not binding. e. 9. The Jewish civil (police) law contains all kinds of provisions meant to regulate the state, e.g. a. death penalties. Deut. 17:2-5. 13:5-10. Lev. 24:15. Ex. 22:18. b. release of servants in the seventh year. Ex. 21:2-11. Lev. 25:39-41. c. provisions concerning manslayers. Ex. 21. Num. 35. Deut. 19. Cities of refuge. d. the conduct of war. Deut. 20. Deut. 22:10: not to plow with an ox and an ass together. Lev. 19:19: not to sow the field with mingled seed. g. clothing. Not to wear a garment mingled of wool and linen. Lev. 19:19. Note a. These civil laws went far beyond the moral law. This is also shown by the bill of divorce. Note b. These laws lost their validity of themselves with the end of the Jewish state. Note c. Paul and Peter admonish believers to be subject to the heathen government. Paul himself wishes to be judged not by the law of Moses, but by the law of Caesar. Acts 25:10, 25. Gen. 49:10: the sceptre shall not depart from Judah, etc. Note d. One must not think that we have to arrange our commonwealth according to this law, although it contains much that is good. Antithesis. Karlstadt: every state must be organized according to the Jewish civil law.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
